As for my Depeche Mode request, I was torn between Violator (1990) and Music For The Masses (1987) ... Violator's my fave but I try not to say that my personal favourites should be on any list like this UNLESS it really is a "must hear" album.  Example: My favourite Floyd album (and favourite album of ALL TIME) is Animals.... but Dark Side should be on this list first and foremost.

But yeah, Violator was just more solid an album all around, so it won my pick. (I listened to DM today at work)  Music For The Masses kinda fell off half-way through and became forgettable.

I'll save my Cure suggestions for later.

So two U2 albums in the next round? Sweet! I nominated Achtung Baby a few pages ago. That album took everything about U2 and spun it around.

Oddly, I like the Zooropa and Pop albums even better than Achtung Baby.   Honestly, I feel their prime was the first 3 albums (Boy, October, War) and everything after that was just just cookie-cuttered until Zooropa when they decided to try something different.... then fans got mad, so they apologized (a horrible thing for a band to do about their own music) and caved and did that Beautiful Day crap and tried to "recapture" their Joshua Tree sound.  Feh.

Give me Echo and The Bunnymen any day.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.  I did that on the "103 Films..." thread, and likely will do so here as well [I know my Benny Goodman fits the bill, as there's only one tune on it that I like enough to repeatedly listen to... but that one is possibly in my top 50 favorite tunes of all time].

Funny, I liked the 'Eno/Lanois years' of U2: "Unforgettable Fire", "Joshua Tree" and I like most of "Achtung Baby"... that's almost exactly right between the 'ages' of U2 that you two prefer.  [Yes, I did the "U2"/"you two" thing deliberately.]  Some of the 'Passengers' stuff is pretty good, but some I think is awful ["Elvis Ate America"].

On a side note, their most recent album impressed the ever-loving flying shit out of me.  Maybe because they did very little build-up to it (aside from the one full week on Letterman) and never ONCE claimed it was "going to be the new Joshua Tree" like they did the few before it.  Anyways, brilliant album and it made me happy.  It just felt like a natural album of a band playing together and not TRYING too hard.

My biggest 'beef' ;) with later U2 albums is that they lost the political/social/personal depth that the earlier albums had [which is, I realize, why some people never liked them in the first place].  But with the loss of that 'vocal-activism', seemingly, they lost the musical depth as well.  If this new one goes back to that political/social/personal awareness, and musical depth, then I might enjoy it.  But I don't care about people singing about superficial crap ['Discotheque'], just as I don't care for small talk; it is a waste of my time (and, with small talk, likely the other person's time).

You know what, I agree with you. Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album, too, and when it came time to beef up the Floyd library Animals is the first album I suggested that APGIL download. But I went with Dark Side of the Moon because it's so well known and such a hallmark of the band's legacy that it seemed silly not to nominate it first.

Animals actually was my LEAST appreciated album by Floyd for a long time... until I decided to spend a week straight listening to nothing BUT Animals.  Then its perfection smacked me in the face and I've loved it ever since.

A true American love story.

That's the best kind of album. The ones you struggle with are the ones that will have lasting value. Modest Mouse's first few albums took me several listens before they clicked, but now they're all among my favorite albums. Of course, ideally, there will be something that hooks you from the beginning, that keeps you coming back. They Might Be Giants is an example of a band that offers a lot on multiple levels. The reasons I love them now are different from the reasons I got into them.

I probably would have suggested Music For The Masses at some point.  It's my favorite Depeche Mode album.

Pop and Zooropa are my second and third favorite U2 albums. I think of their 90s albums as a holy trinity. Believe it or not, most diehard fans love Zooropa and (especially) Pop.

The Passengers album has sone good stuff (Miss Sarajevo) and bad stuff (Elvis Ate America).

Axis: Bold As Love - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

I think this is the band's best album. From start to finish, it's just an incredibly well-rounded record, featuring several of their best and most beautiful songs. Spanish Castle Magic, Castles Made of Sand, Bold As Love, and Little Wing are all here, along with some cool tracks tying it all together. It's just a wonderful listening experience.

I've never considered Hendrix to be a great lead guitarist, but easily one of the greatest rhythm players of all time. The way he so effortlessly fills the musical space with rhythm lines and licks is truly amazing, and a real treat to listen to.

These seem like the deserving winners from the last poll (all received at least 33% of the vote.)

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
The Beatles a.k.a. "The White Album" - The Beatles
Abraxas - Santana
Moving Pictures - Rush
Automatic For The People - R.E.M.

New poll is up.
