LoC #62- Submit Your List for Top 50 Tabletop Games!
« on: July 06, 2012, 08:40:22 PM »
Hey all! Join us for our next list- The Top 50 Tabletop Games!

Here's how it works:

You send me your Top 25 list of top tabletop games.  I will compile all lists received into a master List.  Your list will be assigned points as follows:  25 points for your number 1, 24 points for your number 2, and so on until your number 25 gets one point.

If you don't submit a full list of 25, that is acceptable, but your choices will have fewer points.  A list of 10 entries will only have 10 points for 1st place.  And so on.

What constitutes a tabletop game? A game played around a table. This can be board games, card games, party games, miniature games, RPGs, tile games, dice games or anything similar. One requirement- the game must have been published professionally at some point. So no homebrew mashups made of the parts of various games that all somehow ended up in one box ala Calvinball.

Got a question on whether or not something is allowed? Ask.

Croquet? No. Football? No. Ping Pong? Sigh. I suppose, but please don't vote for ping pong. I don't think it's really what anyone has in mind. Plus it's technically played in the air, rather than on the table so it may not count anyway.

Does that mean that blackjack isn't a tabletop game since you hold the cards above the table? Don't be a smart ass. Hufflepuff loses 5 points.

Need some suggestions?
A list of Card Games
A list of Boardgames so vast that it will probably not help you at all
Wiki's Board game list
Dice Games- same source
Miniature Games
Tile Based games
And, hey. RPGs.

So, here you go. You have until, oh, Sunday the 22nd at midnight server time.

I love lists where I have problems making a list due to not being sure what to cut, it happens fairly rarely. :)

So if I'm all about the Hard Rock Cafe edition of Monopoly, or The Hulk edition of Operation, I assume I'm covered by voting for Monopoly or Operation? Also what about DVD games like Scene It?

Yeah, unless the game is substantially different, a vote for one version will be counted as a vote for the brand. I can think of a few brands where that would not be the case (Clue:Great Museum Caper, Castle Risk, the Axis & Allies variants, Risk 2210, Risk Legacy, Risk: Godstorm... geez, Risk is a minefield for this) , but for the most part I'm not splitting hairs.

And I just realized I just opened up the possibility for edition wars to erupt. Eh, oh well.

Whew. Unless there's a huge objection to doing so, I'd place the various DVD and VHS games as video games as they require a TV to play.

I disagree, I think they should go in board games, even if the action does take place mostly on the screen. If we were doing a top 50 video games list I have no doubt that no one would ever think to include Scene It.

I would think of Scene It as a board game (even if there is no board. )

It plays more like a board game than a video game, doesn't it?

Yeah there's a board, I mean it's basically Trivial Pursuit with an AV element.

It's not one I'd include (because I find it gets boring pretty quickly) but I think it belongs on a board games list more than a video games list (since those are really computer games not generally actual video).

How about a game that certain people think will send you to hell for even owning?

Candy Land?  Yeah, I think that would count as a board game.

You can joke, we weren't even allowed to mention the words "ouija board" when I was a kid. Just uttering it would be enough to summon a demon into your soul.

(Shrug) Okay, Scene it and the like are in.

A Ouija board though... Well, the patent office categorizes it as a  "fortune telling device" which is a subclass of "magic trick."  I'd call it more of an activity than a game myself.

Plus Boardgame Geek doesn't list it as a game either, so I'll default to their judgement. So, no on that one.

But if you go to Toys R Us, you will find Ouija right next to Monopoly with the other board games.

What about Twister?  Obviously not a tabletop game (unless you have a big table or small players).  Does that count as a board game?
