You know... I may actually have that comic.  Wasn't that when all the heroes "died" fighting Onslaught and they were basically handed over to the Image guys for a year? Jim Lee did the X-Men, IIRC.

Rob Liefeld: Proving once again that talent and success can be mutually exclusive.

Also proving that deadlines are more important than quality, if you turn stuff in on time consistently people will start to give you more work than people who can do nice looking work but tend to fail when it comes to the deadlines.

The thing is, when Liefield was at his most popular - during the Image days - he was always late.  Books could be delayed by weeks or months.  That's where some of the worst stuff comes from.  I don't know if more or less time affected the quality of his work at all.

Yes but Image is his own thing, he found initial success was when turning in work for others.

Essentially Image was his own psychedelic Rolls-Royce that he was free to drive into the swimming pool if he so desired.

Pretty much all of Image was late when they first started.  I dropped Spawn when my comic guy showed me an interview with MacFarland where they asked about his late books and he said something about how it "takes time to grow a rose" I cancelled my sub right there.

Personality could be a factor, as well. Allegedly, Liefeld is a REALLY nice guy.

As opposed to MacFarlane, who, while talented (as an ILLUSTRATOR; his writing is complete shit, from top to bottom), is a giant blue-veined dick.

I've heard this about Liefeld as well, which makes me want to meet him/buy some art. Yeah, he's not great. It's true. But doggone it, he's a pro who gets work and is consistently mocked and scorned nearly universally, and still manages to come out smiling. There's something kind of inspiring about that.

And hoo boy are you also right about McFarlane's writing! I re-read the first issue of his Adjectiveless Spider-Man a while back out of nostalgia, and LORDY! I couldn't believe this was the same book I'd liked in high school. It was AWFUL. Indescribably so.
