Yes, working with glass plays tricks on you. Searing your skin hot glass can look exactly the same as room temperature glass. And while this is true for most things, and you don't go trying to pick up a metal pan off the stove without checking, the thing is that you just had the glass glowing red hot, melting and viscous, so when it goes clear and not glowing any more, all solid, for some reason you just think it must be ok to pick it up. And then you don't want to break it so have to put it down gently. And then the cursing and calling yourself stupid for doing that starts....
