It's actually pretty common for people to not care about human death but be uncomfortable around animal death.  It leads to absurd stuff like that dog in Independence Day who outran a suspiciously slow moving fire that was too polite to enter a small side tunnel, even as millions of humans were roasting alive all around the world.

It also made for the best/worst moment in I Am Legend.  There's a film called Tyrannosaur which is meant to be great which begins with (faked) animal cruelty.

Well all I know is I have never been able to understand getting more upset over animals dying then people.  All and All in real life and the movies I would rather see animals die. That's why we drive sheep accross mine fields and test medicine on animals.  Just saying is all.

Well there we go.

The thread is about the reactions people have to things rather than the soundness of said reactions one way or the other.

Yup, if things were completely rational the loss of an adult should have much more of an impact than a little child, care giver vs. dependent, worked to build a life vs. noting achieved yet, but it just doesn't work that way.  The programing is too deep.  Pets set off that same reaction in people to some extent (or at least they should).

Also, animal death in movies tends to be more needless. Given that the animal (usually) has less character developement than the humans, so there is less story driven reasons for it, other than blatant emotional manipulation.

So, we've gone from "is this normal"? to "anyone who doesn't react that that is weird" pretty quickly

No, we really haven't, like I said:

The thread is about the reactions people have to things rather than the soundness of said reactions one way or the other.

You said you have a dog, do you feel protective of him/her?  That's what I was getting at earlier, not necessarily the reaction to movie violence.   The reaction to what's in a movie is harder to judge people on since you know the people and animals are not really being harmed.

No, I think it's a good point.  That and Thrifty's was what I was referring to, might have seemed somewhat defensive but that wasn't my intention  :)

The dog thing was a Son of Sam reference

It's not animals in general.  It's usually more restricted to cute animals and animals like cats and dogs that are kept as pets.

Also it varies from culture to culture.  I've heard that in some Asian countries, it's totally acceptable to eat dog.  I bet those folks wouldn't mind seeing dogs killed on screen.

That's my point if seeing people dropping dead left and right doesn't ruin the movie for me,seeing some animals die will not do it.  I mean I wouldn't have had a problem with ID4 if the dog had died because the movie had already killed millions of people, one dog isn't going to make things worse and a lot of dogs must have already died in those attacks any way.

I could never watch The Toxic Avenger because of the scene in the beginning where those people purposely run over and kill a child. At least I think they killed him, but the point still stands.

Yeah, that scene really hurt any enjoyment I may have gotten out of the movie. Starting like that, it's kinda hard to just have fun with the movie the rest of the time.
