Bay Area RiffTrax fans?
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:03:48 AM »
I live in downtown San Francisco.

Anyone else on the board from either side of the Bay?

I have not noticed any random commentary suggesting this...so I figured it was time to ask.

It's expensive as hell to live here but I am very fond of Frisco and will stay here 'til it's four or five islands when the icecaps melt - if I should live so long.  I've noticed people who live here are beginning to call it that again, not just tourists.  I've ALWAYS called it Frisco, because my parents did.  And maybe partly because it was looked upon with such scorn for no apparent reason.  The whole "don't call it Frisco" thing originated with Herb Caen and even he took the "directive" back when people started taking it too seriously.

I surely can't be the only RT aficionado/MSTie/etc. who lives in this vicinity...

Personally I've never been further west than Indiana, but I know Tripe was in San Francisco not too long ago.

I think there is at least one other person in San Francisco that knows about Rifftrax:

Oh hai, MerryWanna!

Darth, we all know Mr. Wiseau has spent so little time in this city he would get lost even if a GPS unit were nailed to his wrist. And if by chance that greeting were to come from him to me, the conversation would go something like this:

Wiseau: "Oh hai, MerryWanna!"
Merry: "It's somewhere down by San Diego Santa Barbara.  Please...just go there."

(I've lived in California my whole life and grew up less than 50 miles from Ojai.  I can't believe I messed this up.)

I think an actual conversation with Tommy Wiseau would be a fascinating experience.

Not from San Fran but I love the place, I still send out resumes to places in that area in the hopes that one of them might offer me relocation. Probably heading out there next year for the Opera season. :)

Oh and here, pictures.

SWEET!

Very nice photos, Tripe.  Especially enjoyed the architecture gallery. The buildings here are really one of a kind and are (in my current life) probably my second favourite thing about living here, the first being the weather. I'd rather breathe smug than smog. (A South Park reference.)

Thanks, I dabble in photography.

Yeah loved the buildings but, as you will be able to tell if you've not already seen, my favouiritest thing was the Asian Art museum, love that place almost as much as the Art Institute I help out at here (and if I ever end up living in SF, that's where the bulk of my volunteering will be done). :)

That would be "not quite Birdemic territory, but close", I think.

Where is "here" for you?

And it interests me that the museums have volunteer positions.  I've been looking for some way to volunteer some of my overabundant free time to the City and it would fit my collegiate experience (I was not an art history major but took a lot of classes about it. If MoMa needs volunteers, that would be more my area of knowledge.)

I love how all the museums here - science and art, and also the zoo - are open to the public free of charge on the first Wednesday of each month. :)

Detroit

They probably do and yes, MOMA is awesome too (I just lean a bit more eastward) as is the Contemporary Jewish Art (though I find that's like the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History; the permanent collection is okay once, maybe twice, what makes it worth coming back for are the temporary exhibits). When I was at MOMA I ended up giving an impromptu art appreciation talk (which boiled down to "forget what the artist says it's about, what do you make of it?") there's something about the way I always wear a tweed jacket with elbow patches and have my glasses perched on the end of my nose, that makes people feel free to come and ask me about how to understand art and things of that nature.

Oh and the Rainforest installation at The Cali Institute of Science in Golden Gate Park is splendid, and yes, I still wore the tweed. ;)

Is it really as much of a "ghost city" as a lot of folks have been led to believe?

I'm reckoning the rents must be pretty cheap...at least.

I wish you the best of luck finding a job here in SF! And thanks for the heads-up about the rainforest show - if it is still running, I'd like to catch that.

Well Midtown is nice and a few other spots but there's at least twenty miles of the place (most estimates are at least twice that) that are basically desolate wasteland, it's good for wild lower honey though (no joke, as nature reclaims areas the bees have better hunting grounds than in the many of the suburbs).
