Sssssss
« on: April 23, 2012, 08:43:43 PM »
I suggested Snakes on a Plane earlier but someone theorized the team won't riff it since it's too intentionally comedic. Okay, here's another snake movie that's unintentionally comedic instead.

Sssssss is a ridiculous snake movie made around 1972 or '73.  Mad scientist named "Dr. Stoner" - I'm not making this up - plays with snake venom and worships cobras as superior to human beings.  Features also include an alcoholic boa constrictor and enough psychedelia to perk my antennae even if snakes had not been involved. See, cobra venom, according to Dr. Stoner, is "one of the world's most powerful hallucigens" (sic) and as the movie goes on we find injecting it also does other things that are probably fairly predictable at this point.

Of course, I'd like to see any bad snake movie done.

Sidenote: I was lucky enough to catch Cinematic Titanic's San Francisco show when they riffed Rattlers live, and it turned out to be even luckier than I thought it would be because apparently they haven't made a DVD release of it, and I have no idea whether they will or not.

What made that show really special was I'd written Joel a letter and personally requested that CT riff that film - and about a year later, THEY ACTUALLY WENT AND DID IT...WOW.  ;D I got to meet him, along with Trace and the rest of CT, after the show at the autograph table, and I told him I was that "psychedelic snake chick" who'd suggested that Rattlers would be an excellent choice since the acting and scripting are so classically bad--and yet as a child I adored this film just because of all the snake action. He shook my hand and gave me a big smile - it made me feel he must've either really loved my note, or the team found the movie eminently riffable.  Or both. (Of course, it was probably just a very lucky coincidence.)

I've seen this. Very bad film. Although the use of real snakes (particularly Black Mambas) is impressive. Reb Brown is in this as a dumb jock (I know, I never saw it coming) who gets killed in the shower.

I think that idiot gets whacked by a black racer - it was far too close to his body at the time.  The cobras are definitely real.

They didn't have "venomoids" in 1972.  (There's a grey market out there nowadays for normally poisonous snakes with their venom glands surgically removed - which of course makes them have to be force fed a lot of the time since the basic purpose of snake venom is first prey-killing and only secondarily as defense. Most herps find venomoid trafficking rightfully offensive...but movie producers are part of the market now.)
