3 The City of Lost Children <--- I'm disappointed that no one else voted for this. Great movie.

Yet another on my long list of movies I need to see.

I voted for it! Admittedly I probably could've bumped it up a few places, though I'm not sure that would've helped. And I don't know why more didn't vote for it either. Maybe there's just not enough splatstick fans on this board.

Oh, okay, so someone did after all. I can imagine a lot of people thinking that it is an 80s movie given how much practical effects it has.

I have never even heard of that movie before. Then again I have trouble getting through movies that have a lot of gore in them.

It's not realistic gore at all. Way over the top. Think Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.

Okay,sonds like something I should check out.

The LOC wrap-up!

Some people wanted an idea of where their particular favourites were or what the runners up looked like, so here's a little run down of what just didn't quite make it:

At number 51 we have Tombstone, which appeared on 5 lists for a total of 60 points, unfortunately, that made it one point shy of tying with our number 50 entry The Mummy.  With the same amount of points, but only on 4 lists, was Pleasantville.  Just below those are three films with 59 points: Beauty & the Beast, Dark City, and Heat.  Beauty & the Beast and Heat share the 52 spot appearing on 5 lists each, with Dark City (Officially 53) only showing on 4.  From there, there's steady decline in points for Babe and Clueless (Joint 54th) on 57 points, Contact (55th) with 55 points, and then Dumb & Dumber (56th) with 53.

Foreign language films don't really feature on our top 50, with just Princess Mononoke appearing at 33. 
The next highest is another Studio Ghibli film, Whisper of the Heart at 69 (snicker) with 40 points on 2 lists.  Lower down, we see a cluster of foreign films near the bottom, with Chungking Express at 95, Run Lola Run at 97, City of Lost Children and Audition at 98, and Three Colours: Red at 99.  Of those films, only Run Lola Run appears on more than one list (two) for a total of 23 points.

Making the most lists without appearing on the top 50, there are a couple on 5 lists: Independence Day is 74th with 36 points, while Home Alone and The Fugitive are joint 80th with 32 points.  The lowest entry on the LOC with 4 appearances is Grosse Pointe Blank with just 23 points and coming it at a pitiful 96.  The lowest entry on the LOC with 3 appearances in My Cousin Vinny with 19 points, and it's so crowded down there that it's hard to tally just exactly where it comes in, though it's somewhere near the 120-130 range.

The 93 spot is reserved for a single entry that made the top of people's lists, of which there are no less than 5 entries: Fantasia 2000, Interview with a Vampire, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Braveheart, and Addams Family Values.

Overall, out of the 275 unique entries in the LOC, 135 films were only on one list, 51 on two lists, 19 on 3, 14 on 4, 19 on 5, 10 on 6, 6 on 7 lists, 6 on 8, 4 on 9, 1 film on 10, 11, and 12 lists, 2 on 13, 2 on 14, 1 on 15, 1 on 17 and 18, and Groundhog Day takes the prize for most appearances on people's lists with a mighty 19.

Warning, if you don't like gore of any kind, Dead Alive is not for you.  It was once voted the goriest movie ever made - there's like a swimming pool's worth of the stuff near the end.  The only other film that's as gory as that one is the Story of Ricky-Oh.  Which is kung-fu with gore.  In a prison.

Yeah, but it goes so beyond gore that it just gets ridiculous. Wonderfully, wonderfully, deliciously ridiculous. In all honesty the actual grossest part of the movie is the custard scene (which I can barely watch, truth be told).

Looking over the runner-up list, there's a few more I sort of wish I'd voted for. Gremlins 2 and My Cousin Vinny for sure, probably Men in Black as well (I often forget just how great the first movie is).

Also, whoever put Three Colors: Red on your list, you're a good person. It didn't make mine, but my foreign-loving friend will give you a big hug if he ever meets you.

Dear lord in heaven. Doc if you have problems with gore, do not see Dead Alive/Brain Dead.  "Oh, it's over the top gore." Yeah, I'm sure that will mollify Doc as he sits through the dinner party scene. Geez. This is like sending someone sensitive to swearing to go see Goodfellas.

There is a huge diference between realistic gore and over the top ludicrous gore. Dead Alive is not realistic at all.

Doc, you will know if this movie is for you by just watching the first scene on Skull Island when they are stealing the rat monkey.

But the swearing in Goodfellas isn't realistic at all.  Think The Big Lebowski or Reservoir Dogs.

Don't worry it's only gore that looks real that bothers me so I will not watch it while eating and give it a shot.  I can always turn it off if it gets too gross.

A Perfect World was terribly underappreciated, glad to see it made someones list. Defending Your Life is another goodie. I can't remember if I've ever seen Bobby Fischer, I'll have to check it out.

The thing is with only 25 to chose from a lot of favorites aren't going to make it. Doesn't mean I don't love Goldeneye or Quick Change, just that I had others I liked more.

As for Barton Fink, for me it's like a Fellini knock-off, and I'd rather watch Fellini. Same deal with Miller's Crossing, I love it, but it's the Glass Key with a dash of Yojimbo thrown in. And when I'm in the mood for it I stop and think, "Oh, but I think I'll watch Yojimbo instead!"
