I wonder how Seven holds up in the light of how explicit horror films have become since.

In terms of gore and blood and the gruesome factor, it pales in comparison.  It's tame.   As is Silence of the Lambs.   I'd still put those two head and shoulders above any serial killer from the last 15 years.

Yeah, it's all about influence for them. And while the actual gory features of Se7en (that's what I'm calling it, so there) aren't really all that much (or even simply shown in passing, never full on), the tone and atmosphere of that movie is a gritty, nihilistic feat that hasn't really be equaled. Plus, can't beat the actual acting in those two movies, something that's always on the backburner for modern copycats (that said, I thought The Cell was probably the best imitator of them all).

I think I can predict what at least half of the top 10 will be (and, sadly, it looks like some of my last hopefuls won't be making it). A small, nasty feeling is starting to develop in the back of my head that my number 1 won't make it, which would be patently unacceptable if true.

Cowboys are our Samurai.  They are our Knights.  A lot of them may be anti-heroes, but they're still heroes, and they are very much American (even the Italian ones).

hrm. based on that, someone needs to start making a bunch of portage-related fur trapper movies for us canadians.

Found one:

Porthole Horse is my favorite!

I tend to not let the thoughts or actions of others affect my likes and dislikes.  I love the Toy Story movies.  Others opinions that support or contradict that feeling will not make me change the way I feel about them.

I'm the only person who thinks Toy Story 2 was weak. 1 and 3 are great, but 2 is juvenile and the jokes are obvious.

Yup, it sucks, but it happens.  With Toy Story I already didn't care about them at all, so it wasn't a huge shift, but I can't shake the associations.

I didn't mean for that to sound as condescending as it reads now that I am reading that back.  I guess I can understand how if you don't particularly care for something, seeing someone gush over it would make one dislike it even more.  In my opinion though, only a total sourpuss would hate the Toy Story movies. :)

This I just don't see, I'm afraid. All three of them are excellent movies, but I'm one of the many who finds the second one to be the best. It seemed to improve upon all the parts of the first that made it so good (and while I would hold something against it for introducing the "There must be scenes of original-style Buzz in every Toy Story movie" rule, they generally handle that pretty well too).

I'm not one of the ones who pegs this series as Pixar's best (that would be WALL-E, of course), or my favorite (Ratatouille, as it is for everyone), but yeah... those toys do good work.

As you like. :) I'm pretty 'meh' on Pixar in general. I only really like The Incredibles, and outright dislike several.

I am totally with you on Pixar.  They have always been hit or miss for me.  Mostly hit though.  I absolutely hated Cars and A Bugs Life.  Loved The Incredibles and Monsters Inc.  Was kinda meh on Up and Wall-E.  Thought they were great films, but didn't have the same long term rewatch value as my most favorite Pixar movies.

Trivia fact! The American Humane Association monitored the filming of scenes involving Brooks' crow. During the scene where he fed it a maggot, the AHA objected on the grounds that it was cruel to the maggot, and required that they use a maggot that had died from natural causes. One was found, and the scene was filmed.

Ahhh, that's more like it. Still my single absolute favorite movie ever, Shawshank is, even after I really started to watch a ton of movies and the very concept of what a "single absolute favorite movie ever" really is started to lose solid definition.

Now this is a movie I am totally "meh" on.  I thought it was a good movie, but I have never understood the unadulterated love for this picture.

Now this is a movie I am totally "meh" on.  I thought it was a good movie, but I have never understood the unadulterated love for this picture.

My Mom used to watch this nonstop back in the day, and I never really got what the big deal with it was either. Then I actually took some time to sit down and watch the whole thing, and, I dunno... just sorta really, really, really clicked with me. Was an emotional mess by the end of it. And while I should add that movies who go the full nine yards on the "Hope conquers all" message tend to get me more than most, it's still just a really well put together movie. Hits plenty of drama and humor beats, features Morgan Freeman doing his thing at his best, and the always-underrated Tim Robbins keeping up. I actually need to stop, since I'm a hardcore fanboy for this movie so I'm not the best at convincing others as to why, exactly, it's got all the hoopla around it.

Shawshank is a very well made movie.  It's flawed (like most great movies, but it makes up for it by being able to get viewers invested in the characters situation and you really want him to beat a corrupt system.  And getting involved is always a plus for movies.
