Reauthoring problem: Sound is too fast
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:35:50 PM »
I've been trying to do some Rifftrax reauthoring, but I'm running into a problem. I'm doing everything the Reauthoring Guide is saying, and everything looks great on my computer. But when I try the DVD in my DVD player, the audio is way too fast. (Not chipmunk fast, more like Munchkin fast.) The video is fine though, as far as I can tell. So it doesn't take long before the audio goes out of sync with the video. I can even play the DVD in my computer and it's fine. Any idea what might be going wrong?

And it hasn't been every DVD I've tried. I did New Moon and it's perfect on the computer and DVD player. And if I did anything different on that specific reauthor, I have no idea what it might have been!

Thanks for the help!

Is it too fast on the finished DVD?  What about the audio tracks in Audacity?  Does it sync up in Audacity?  Check the Readme file and play the track at a few of the sync lines to make sure they sync up throughout the movie.

How does it look if you play the DVD files on your computer before burning to disc?

Double check the riff MP3 you downloaded.  It sounds like you may be using a PAL MP3 and an NTSC DVD.  NTSC is North America, PAL is I think Europe.  PAL is faster than NTSC.  If you got a DVD for use in a North American DVD player, it'll be NTSC, but Rifftrax MP3s are sold in NTSC and PAL format (you get both when you make your purchase, so don't worry about inadvertently buying the wrong one).  They have different names; I think the PAL ones have _PAL somewhere in the filename.

So try redownloading the MP3 and make sure you didn't download the wrong file format.

No, everything seems to be fine until I play the DVD on my DVD player. I checked how everything looks in the VLC player, and all indications at that point are spot on. The sound is fine on the riff and the movie, and I made sure to get the NTSC version. I was worried on one of my earlier ones that I might have not changed the setting to NTSC from PAL when I reauthored in ReJig, but if that had happened, wouldn't the entire movie be too fast, not just the audio? (And it's both the Rifftrax and the movie audio together that are too fast.)

And in fact, I can even play the finished DVD on my computer and it's fine. I would say it could be a problem with compatibility, but the New Moon Rifftrax is perfect, and I've recorded other things with these DVDs that have worked fine on this player.

Thanks again for the assist!

Have you checked to see if your audio editing program is speeding it up?  I know some of them can be set to do that and if you have one setting wrong that could be the trouble.

Try converting the Rifftrax MP3 file to AC3 format using FFMPEGUI, then importing it into Audacity.

What version of Audacity are you using?  I have found there are different solutions to the same problem depending on version.

Wait, if everything is fine until the point that you put it on a DVD and play it on your player, maybe it's the creation of the DVD image and the burning.  What are you using to create the DVD image and burn to DVD?
