This sounds like a good solution to reach rural areas, but I have a hard time believing this system would be comparable in speed to fiber optic cable.

That appears to be better than the earlier attempt at broadband over power lines, though it also looks like a certain large corporation is aiming for another power play by suppressing competition through laws like that.
