Rolled a critical fail. Nunchucks get tangled and whack me in the back of the head. Take 5 damage and immobilize self until the end of my next turn.

I have an idea: how about we just drop the Karma thing for good and go back to expressing approval/disapproval through replies & interaction? I'd rather someone simply reply with  ;D  or  ::)  than express themselves through a secret ballot.

Because posts with nothing but smileys are dumb, and just bloat the board.  As wurwolf and DB have pointed out, FB is now the dominant model for social interaction on the web, and the use of "like" so ubiquitous there that something like that would be best used here.

The system in use on another board shows a little bar beneath a post that says what users liked it. When someone likes one of your posts there are notifications on the top right of your screen that says "new likes received," and you click on that and can see them. So that's direct feedback, it's not anonymous, and it's all "positive."   It also doesn't end up with 50 moronic smiley posts in a row.

Oh, I was thinking of the LOL GIF. I'm not a big fan of emoticons either, but sometimes they're a necessary evil to prevent the recipient from taking deadpan sarcasm seriously. They help reduce misinterpretations in this respect. Consider the following theoretical response:

A-Imrahil, who died and fucking made you king of netiquette?
B-Imrahil, who died and fucking made you king of netiquette? ;)

Assuming you don't interpret winks as flirtation or Visine ads, doesn't response B make it more clear this is a silly comment made in jest? It's the type of thing that could otherwise be misinterpreted as a serious criticism.

I used to be anti-LOL too, but I'll take whatever genuine approval I can get.

But I don't consider the Karma genuine approval. Applause/kudos works better with blog posts than messageboards.

At any rate, my point was not endorsing emoticons! But rather a preference for typed feedback than clicked feedback. Clicking is for polls, imo. I think it's weird that Karma would turn every user into a binary poll. Do you consider yourself a poll or a human being? Or both? For better or worse, this reply I'm typing is to the human being who goes by Imrahil on the Rifftrax Forum. (Insert joke about "life forms")

I added the "Likes" modification. Let me know what you think.
I work REALLY hard on the site. (Not the forum so much.) I'd love it if you bought me a beer via PayPal!

The -heart icon for unliking cracks me up for some reason.

Just noticed the giant like button at the top of the page, not sure what I think about that, seems a bit large.

That's so cheesy!  :P   If I wasn't so sauced, I'd explain how upper crust people just don't make comments like that... but it would probably take me over 30 minutes and then I'd really pay for it!

[As I'm writing to ask this, I keep hearing Bill in the Film Crew riffing of The Giant of Marathon saying "HUGE testicles... HUGE testicles....  I wonder if that means anything?  ;) ]

torgosPizza, I have a question, and a suggestion.  [And, as usual, apologies for length, but I wanted the 'what' and the 'why' to be clear, so there'd be no misunderstanding.]

QUESTION:
Is there any way in the Preview option to turn the visible code back on in the typing box, but still use the buttons?  I've found I can only do one or the other.

I had to fight with just this one post SIX [edit:] ELEVEN times to turn off the italic once I'd used it once, as it kept reappearing with any new text I'd type, or after a hard return, or sometimes after just a space.  With the visible formatting code, it was VERY easy to delete a 'stray' bit of formatting code so you could then concentrate on what you were typing.  It was also MUCH easier to modify code [e.g. change picture size for a picture being 'quoted' by simply adding " width=360" after the "[img" part of the code, rather than having to type it all in manually.  Also, there are sometimes code that doesn't 'act right' in the box.  I actually had two hard returns after the opening bracketed line, before using your name, yet the Preview wouldn't include a break there, until I finally deleted everything from the last character of the bracketed part to the first letter of your name [inclusive], then retyped the "] <two line break> t".

For most users, who likely don't fiddle with formatting as much as I [yes, yes: I'm a formatting whore!] it probably doesn't make as much difference, particularly if they just use the posting box at the bottom of each page, but I suspect there are more people than just me that use the formatting code, even if just subliminally.

SUGGESTION:
(Which is phrased as a question, actually.)  Is there any possibility of there being - in addition to the "New Replies" and "Unread" buttons, a "Most-Liked Posts (since your last visit)"?  It would be a great way for 'oldies' such as myself, and newbies (which you all [and 'we-all'] want to increase) to find the 'most enjoyed' comments and possibly find new topics to become active in from there.

I did see that in the Forum main areas that it lists the number who have Liked the whole thread.  What I was thinking with this was more like a 'best of posts' [had to write as 'best of...' because 'liked of posts' sounds REALLY stupid ;) ].

I do realize that you've busted your ass with this forum
, particularly lately, and I realize you've always done a great deal keeping the nuts and bolts of the forum running as smoothly as it does.  But I thought I'd ask since you're 'in there' at the moment.
