Indiana wants me!

#50 Indiana Jones

(29 Points) 2 of 24 Lists - Highest Ranking - #8  Mr Basehart

Appeal:
Rugged, adventurous, and man that smile!  Interesting fact: Harrison Ford can no longer smile like that without making it look sarcastic.

Bio:
In his role as a college professor of archaeology, Henry Jones Jr. is scholarly and learned in a tweed suit, lecturing on ancient civilizations. In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it is revealed that Jones is influenced by the Marxist Archaeologist, Vere Gordon Childe, whose qualified acceptance of cultural diffusionism theory he propounds. Ironically, though Childe loathes fieldwork, Indy goes on to say, "If you want to be a good archaeologist, you gotta get out of the library." This is in tongue-in-cheek contrast to the previous film'scomment, "Seventy percent of all archaeology is done in the library."

However, at the opportunity to recover important artifacts, Dr. Jones transforms into "Indiana," a "non-superhero superhero" image he has concocted for himself. Producer Frank Marshall said, "Indy [is] a fallible character. He makes mistakes and gets hurt. [...] That's the other thing people like: He's a real character, not a character with superpowers."Spielberg said there "was the willingness to allow our leading man to get hurt and to express his pain and to get his mad out and to take pratfalls and sometimes be the butt of his own jokes. I mean, Indiana Jones is not a perfect hero, and his imperfections, I think, make the audience feel that, with a little more exercise and a little more courage, they could be just like him." According to Spielberg biographer Douglas Brode, Indiana created his heroic figure so as to escape the dullness of teaching at a school. Both of Indiana's personas reject one another in philosophy, creating a duality. Harrison Ford said the fun of playing the character was because Indiana is both a romantic and a cynic, while scholars have analyzed Indiana as having traits of a lone wolf; a man on a quest; a noble treasure hunter; a hardboiled detective; a human superhero; and an American patriot.

Like many characters in his films, Jones has some autobiographical elements of Spielberg. Indiana lacks a proper father figure because of his strained relationship with his father, Henry Senior. His own contained anger is misdirected at the likes of Professor Abner Ravenwood, his mentor at the University of Chicago, leading to a strained relationship with Marion Ravenwood. The teenage Indiana bases his own look on a figure from the prologue of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, after being given his hat. Marcus Brody acts as Indiana's positive role model at the college. Indiana's own insecurities are made worse by the absence of his mother. In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the character becomes the father in a temporary family unit with Willie Scott and Short Round to survive. Indiana is rescued from the evil of Kali by Short Round's dedication. Indiana also saves many children from slavery.

Because of Indiana's strained relationship with his father, who was absent much of Indiana's youth searching for the Holy Grail, the character does not pursue the more spiritual aspects of the cultures he studies. Indiana uses his knowledge of Shiva to ultimately defeat Mola Ram. In Raiders, however, he is wise enough to close his eyes in the presence of God in theArk of the Covenant. By contrast, his rival Rene Belloq dies horribly for having the audacity to try to communicate directly with God.

In Crusade's prologue, Indiana's intentions are revealed as prosocial, as he believes artifacts "belong in a museum." In the film's climax, Indiana undergoes "literal" tests of faith to retrieve the Grail and save his father's life. He also remembers Jesus as a historical figure – a humble carpenter – rather than an exalted figure when he recognizes the simple nature and tarnished appearance of the real Grail amongst a large assortment of much more ornately decorated ones. Henry Senior rescues his son from falling to his death when reaching for the fallen Grail, telling him to "let it go," overcoming his mercenary nature. The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles explains how Indiana becomes solitary and less idealistic after fighting in World War I. In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Jones is older and wiser, whereas his sidekicks Mutt and Mac are youthfully arrogant and greedy, respectively.

#49 Ariel

(29 Points) 2 of 24 Lists - Highest Ranking - #5  George Harrison

Appeal:
Sweet-hearted, kind, occasionally has a nice voice, occasionally has legs and is endlessly naive.

Bio:
Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena, rulers of Atlantica, and has six older sisters. She is often seen in the company of Flounder, her best friend, and Sebastian, her father's advisor who is often assigned to watch over her. In the television series and first film, Ariel has a fascination with the human world and often goes off to find human artifacts that she displays in a secret grotto. Ariel is often rebellious, wandering off on her own to explore her surroundings, and frequently disobeys the orders of her father or Sebastian, causing conflict between the characters. In The Little Mermaid she is depicted as being willing to do anything to be with Prince Eric, even giving up her voice to become human. Clements described her as a typical teenager, prone to errors of judgment. She also is incredibly curious, and her curiosity often leads her into dangerous situations.

Looks like somebody knows how to handle a wand.

#48 Hermione Granger

(29 Points) 2 of 24 Lists - Highest Ranking - #4  Lassieface

Appeal:
Smart, charmingly (or perhaps annoyingly depending on who you ask) arrogant and, before you realize it, smoking hot.  Where early adopters of fandom pedophiles or simply head of the curve?

Bio:
In the books, Hermione is described as having bushy brown hair and brown eyes. Her front teeth, already very large, grow uncontrollably in Goblet of Fire after she is hit by a spell cast by Draco Malfoy. Madam Pomfrey attends to her in the hospital wing and, at her request, shrinks the teeth down to a normal size for her mouth.

Hermione's most prominent features include her prodigious intellect and cleverness. She is levelheaded, book-smart and is very good with logic. She is often bossy yet unfailingly dutiful and loyal to her friends—a person who can be counted on. Rowling stated that Hermione is a person that "never strays off the path; she always keeps her attention focused on the job that must be done." Despite Hermione's intelligence and bossy attitude, Rowling says that Hermione has "quite a lot of vulnerability in her personality," as well as a "sense of insecurity underneath," feels "utterly inadequate...and to compensate, she tries to be the best at everything at school, projecting a false confidence that can irritate people." During her Defence against the Dark Arts exam at the end of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione reveals that her biggest fear is failure, after a Boggart takes the form of Professor McGonagall and tells her that she has failed all her exams. Her Patronus form is an otter
.
Hermione has an extremely compassionate side to her personality and is quick to help others, especially those who are defenseless, such as Neville Longbottom, first-years, House-Elves, fellow Muggle-borns, half-giants like Hagrid, and werewolves like Lupin. It was revealed by Rowling after the publication of the final book that Hermione's career in the Ministry was to fight for the rights of the oppressed (such as House-elves or Muggle-borns). Hermione is also very protective of her friends and values them so much that Rowling has suggested that, if Hermione had looked in the Mirror of Erised, she would have seen Harry, Ron, and herself "alive and unscathed, and Voldemort finished." Hermione has also learned to ignore what bullies such as Malfoy say to her, often preventing Harry and Ron from retaliating and thinking of some way to outsmart him. She accepts her status as a Muggle-born witch, and states in Deathly Hallows that she is "proud of it".

Hermione is portrayed during the whole series as an exceptionally talented young witch. Rowling has stated that Hermione is a "borderline genius." She received eleven O.W.L.s, ten Outstandings and one Exceeds Expectations, in Defence against the Dark Arts. She is the best student in Harry's year and is repeatedly the first student to master any spell or charm introduced in classes and even from more advanced years, as evidenced when she is able to conjure a Protean Charm on the D.A.'s fake Galleon coins, which is actually a N.E.W.T. level charm. She is also the first one to be able to cast non-verbal spells. Hermione is an exceptional duellist, capable of outmatching even Death Eaters, as shown in the battle at the Department of Mysteries, at the Lovegoods' house, and in the Battle of Hogwarts. However, Rowling has stated that while during the first three books Hermione would have beaten Harry in a magical duel, by the fourth book Harry is so good at Defence Against the Dark Arts that he would have defeated Hermione. Hermione did not tend to do as well in subjects that were not learned through books or formal training, as broom flying did not come as naturally to her in her first year as it did to Harry, and she showed no affinity for Divination, which she dropped from her third year studies. She was also not good at Wizard's Chess, as it was the only thing at which she ever lost.

Hermione's Patronus is an otter, Rowling's favourite animal. Her wand is made of vine wood and dragon heartstring core; vine is the wood ascribed to Hermione's fictional birth month (September) on the Celtic calendar.

Indiana Jones is perhaps the most awesome man never to live.

Hermione? I don't really see the appeal, but I haven't seen the last two Potter movies either.  Ariel isn't bad, but she doesn't make my Disney hotties list.

#47 Emma Frost

(29 Points) 2 of 24 Lists - Highest Ranking - #2  Gunflyer

Appeal:
Cruel, icy, arrogant bitch.  And yes, that is the appeal.

Bio:
Emma Frost is what they had in mind when they came up with the phrase ‘cold hearted bitch.’ While that covers a lot of who Emma is, she does have a softer side to her and a strong sense of loyalty to a few select people. As a former member of the Hellfire Club, Emma may be constantly striving for redemption but that doesn’t stop her from not having too many morals qualms in relation to killing when the situation calls for it.

Emma Grace Frost was born in Boston, MA to Winston and Hazel Frost, a wealthy family where coldness was the norm. After her father declared her to be his heir and then committed her brother Christian to a mental institution, she rejected her family and left for New York to pursue her education. At the time, she also auditioned to be a dancer for the Hellfire Club. Eventually, she worked her way to the top, becoming Hellfire’s White Queen and also inheriting the entire Frost fortune upon her father’s death.

For several years, she and the rest of the Hellfire Club were a thorn in the X-men’s side. Emma not only founded her own Massachusetts Academy but created her own team in response to Xavier’s; the Hellions. When a Sentinel attack killed the Hellions and left Emma in a psychic coma, the X-men brought her in. When she woke up, she was completely disoriented and distraught by the death of her students. This sparked in her a chance for change. Xavier gave her a second chance and since then, she proved her loyalty to the X-men repeatedly. Sean Cassidy, also known as Banshee, even decided to help her with the school. She continued to run the Massachusetts Academy in her own unique way but never once crossed the line, devoting herself to her students’ well-being. In true Emma fashion, she found her favourites amongst the student body, most notably the Stepford Cuckoos and Julian Keller.

About a year ago, the Friends of Humanity launched an unprovoked and unexpected attack upon the Academy, catching everyone by surprise. There were over two dozen casualties and the school itself was left in ruins. Amongst the dead were two of the Cuckoos. Distraught by the event, Emma made the decision to take the X-men up on their offer and moved to New York to join them, subsequently bringing half of her remaining student body with them. The other half decided to return to their homes, too scared by the attack to continue attending a mutant school.

Since coming to Xavier's, Emma has become even more focused than ever on the safety of her students, even pushing them too hard at times. A repeat of Massachusetts is something unfathomable for her. She's unwilling to compromise when it comes to this. She and Wolverine have essentially taken over the Danger Room sessions and she teaches courses in both English and History. She also serves as a psychic therapist for some in the school, including the recently returned Scott Summers. And, of course, in addition to all this, she continues to run her company. Someone's got to help pay for all this after all.

Camel Toe? That bulge makes her look more like Edgar Frost than Emma.

Frank Quitely never drew the most flattering characters in comics.

#46 Birdgirl

(30 Points) 2 of 24 Lists - Highest Ranking - #6  Asbestos Bill

Appeal:
Selfless and eager to please.  A bit of a scatterbrain… but skilled with a whip.

Bio:
She is Phil's daughter. Upon meeting Harvey, she professes an immediate interest in his work, dressing up as "Birdgirl" and attempting to secure a position as his sidekick. When she is in costume, she is constantly hit on by Phil, who does not realize that they are related. She is prone to making monologues about her secret identity when she undergoes an internal crisis, often failing to realize that others are within earshot. The monologues, however, are never noticed. Near the end of the series, after Phil is seemingly killed by a bus, she takes control of the law firm.
