Since the other film score thread seems to have disappeared, I thought it would be opportune to start a new one.  So feel free to discuss all things film score related here.

So apparently Sony Classical is going to reissue the soundtrack to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in time for the 3D rerelease of the film.  But instead of a special edition soundtrack featuring every note of music recorded for the film, like some might hope, or even a rerelease of the sloppy and somewhat insulting "Ultimate Edition" (which contained the film edit), it's just going to be a rerelease of the original 74-minute soundtrack with slightly different packaging. 

If I was going to complain about George Lucas, I would complain about the fact that he spends so much money on things no one cares about like whether or not the Ewoks blink, but puts forth no effort to releasing full versions of prequel soundtracks.

Re: Episode I soundtrack...I only ever listen do the shortened version. The "ultimate edition" does nothing for me.

I made my own edit taken from the 74 minute soundtrack, the Ultimate Edition, and various episode 1 video games.  I tried to present the music in the same order as it would have appeared in the movie had all of it been used.  I used the special edition soundtracks of the original trilogy as my inspiration, so instead of presenting each cue individually, several cues are grouped into single tracks, and the second disc begins with the concert versions of Duel Of The Fates and Anakin's Theme.  It's not perfect, and the sound quality on quite a few tracks leaves a lot to be desired, but at least I can hear almost the entire score mostly as it was intended to have been presented, if not at the quality it was intended to be presented.

I really don't like the "here's the music as it appeared on the movie" approach. I always, always prefer suites arranged by the composer.  If I want to hear the music as used in the movie I watch the movie.  This is why I never bother with isolated score tracks either (especially since there's often minutes of silence).  I mean, I guess from some kind of weird completist standpoint it's nice to have it all, but I'd still rather have it make sense musically than have to match something I'm not even watching.

The problem with that is I don't think the composer is always the best judge of what's the best music from the movie.  And if it's a score that's consistantly good both as music and as film music, then there's no reason to leave stuff out.  Take Star Trek V.  What got released on the original soundtrack album was good, no question, but it was a great score throughout, yet until recently there was only, like 40 minutes of it available in any official release.

Have you heard the full score? Do you feel that the additions are more worthwhile musically?  I'm kind of an orchestral purist and I don't love electronic stuff (which is why a lot of what Goldsmith does irritates me--I love his "Explorers" themes, but when they get all electronic wurblewarbles I lose interest, so I have about 3 tracks from his whole album), and I feel like a lot of what was left off was this kind of bizarre weird moog synth shit.

Meh.  I don't mind that kind of electronic music so much.  At least Goldsmith only used the synthesizer for sounds he couldn't get from the orchestra.

If this was missed in the last thread, got two excellent slightly older scores for y'all - both by Debbie Wiseman.

First off, we have Arsene Lupin. It's to a French film based on the legendary thief character.

And then we have her more recent score for the movie Lesbian Vampire Killers. It's a parody score, but it's one of those serious parody scores - and DAMN. Massively gothic and beautiful - and also features the best cue title ever ("Whores of Fucking Hades, Prepare for Fucking Death!"):

Far better Gamera music, for the first film in the much better 90's trilogy - unfortunately, all I can find is a suite. Music by Kō Ōtani, the man who would go on to score the game Shadow of the Colossus.
