Oh Glee, Glee, Glee...

Glee To Resurrect Star Wars Christmas Special

Here we have the award for most bizarre news story of the week (surely nothing will beat it before Friday, unless Steven Moffat reveals he’s making a Kamelion spin-off series starring Matthew Waterhouse). You may have thought that George Lucas would want the infamous 1978 Star Wars Christmas Special – a generally embarrassing music, comedy and dance “spectacular” produced for CBS TV in 1978 – to be buried, forgotten and banished from YouTube (uploaded from dodgy sixth generation VHS copies), but apparently not. Because presumably somebody at Lucasfilm has given the thumbs up for Glee to resurrect it for this year’s Christmas special.

Quite what form this resurrection will take is not yet clear, but TVGuide reports that the show’s star, Matthew Morrison — who also directs the Christmas episode — has revealed, “We’re doing a Christmas special within the episode of Glee and it’s a throwback and a tribute to the Star Wars holiday special and the Judy Garland Christmas special.”

Members of the cast have already Tweeted pics of Chewbacca on set, but Morrison says that Chewie will not be singing. But how about R2-D2 and Artie performing a dance number?

(facepalm) Yeah, I can't possibly see why this would be a bad idea.

If I get to see Lea Michele in a slave Leia outfit, it will all be worth it.

Wow. Way to really speak to your audience, Glee. Seriously, how many people that watch that show are actually going know what the Star Wars Holiday Special even IS, much less have watched it? Yeah, they'll recognize it as Star Wars related, sure. But it just seems like they will confuse most of their audience.

Well sure, the very few that would frequent a forum like this. But that isn't the major demographic for this show, is it? (an honest question) I would presume it would be mostly teenagers, particularly girls. The closest most of them would get to a comic convention would be if they went there just to see the Twilight panels.
Of course, i could be generalizing more than necessary. Does the show often scew nerdy with it's selection fo songs? Have they ever done a rousing rendition of Patrick Swayze Christmas?

If they did, I would gain just enough respect for the show to raise my opinion of it from beneath contempt to just contempt.

This would be far from the first time they've picked something that happened well before the target demo was born to reference. I think they do a pretty good job of either explaining the references, or keeping them subtle so that the older crowd catches them and explains them later.

The important part of this is the Star Wars part of Star Wars Holiday Special. Trotting out Chewbacca for some dream sequence isn't going to alienate anybody... and I'm doubting they are going to recreate Harvey Corman's cooking show or Diane Carroll simulating an orgasm for wookie porn.

Isn't that kind of the only reason to do this "tribute to SWHS" thing, though? It's wierdness (and it's obscurity) is the whole reason why it's infamous.

I remember watching an episode of Miley Cyrus with my cousin, and she (Miley) was wearing Bjork's swan dress from the Oscars. I was like, whooa, that is SO going over most of these kids' heads. That's for either the parents/adults/me or the hipper kids watching. Thanks, producers/writers!

Oh! And don't forget, Glee was partly (or mostly) responsible for a resurgence of Journey music popularity.
