5 Quint  –  Jaws (1975)  73 points
(6 of 14 lists. (Highest ranking - #8 Space)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ys4V-MSXnAM?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/ys4V-MSXnAM?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Director: Guess who? (He has, without question) the most memorial deaths on this list)
Starring: Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw….and don’t forget Ruchard Dreyfuss’ cocaine
Gore Factor: High
Sad Factor: I think it’s pretty high especially after the story Quint tells the guys on the boat about being in his first Shark Attack in the navy….on the other hand, I am sure even Quint thought his death kicked ass
Wow/Kickass Factor: SUPER SUPER HIGH.

Synopsis:

Man goes into cage. Cage goes into Salsa. Shark’s in the salsa….our shark. Yes, Quint is the quintessential bad ass of the 1970s, and seeing how he disposes of sharks only to get eaten by the number 1 shark of all certainly adds to his cool cred. Too bad for Quint, he never got that bigger boat

Director: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff
Starring: James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, and Matthew Broderick
Gore Factor: Minimal
Sad Factor: This scene is the reason many people have daddy issues. Well maybe not, but it could be.
Wow/Kickass Factor: Hmmm, this is interesting. On the one hand, it’s not that unique of a death, but the fact that it occurred in a Disney movie and was soooooooo friggin sad (not to mention the fact the clear Hamlet undertones)

Synopsis:

Being King is a sucky thing sometimes…like when people try to kill you by drinking you. Or when your brother puts poison into your ear and then bones your ex. Or when your brother tosses you off a cliff in front of your son so that he runs away and joins a warthog and a meerkat to sing the most annoying song ever.

I wish I had thought of this. The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies, but I haven't seen it in quite a while. Totally did not occur to me.

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Thought of it, but it just didn't make it.  Plus I couldn't remember Rugen's name.

"Are you trying to look like David Bowie?"

Only made up adjectives are effective enough for Bowie.  (and they can include negative ones for that weakass "Never Let Me Down" album).

Honorable Mention Anna  – Martyrs (2008)  25 points
(1 of 14 lists. (Highest ranking - #1 D.B. Barnes)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/sHe2y14xAv8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/sHe2y14xAv8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Director: Pascal Laugier
Starring: Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï and Catherine Bégin
Gore Factor: Very high, as in skinned alive.
Sad Factor: Crushing and somehow satisfying at the same time.
Wow/Kickass Factor: Nothing can prepare you for it.

Synopsis: (Written by Barnes)

This is an absolutely soul-crushing movie, and this a powerfully emotional scene. Anna's death encompasses everything it led up to. I've never seen anything that is at once so horrible and so beautiful. The level of violence, the bleakness, the beauty of it. It is the ultimate act of defiance. This movie impacted me like a ton of bricks. I love how it's basically two movies, the first being an intense, supernatural, instant gratification revenge horror movie and the second being this incredibly moving psychological and spiritual revenge movie. It really is a stunning film.

And a Hollywood remake is a stupid idea. You're not going to make this movie any better, so don't even try. Leave this movie alone. I like Kristen Stewart (outside of her slack-jawed performances in the Twilight trash) but there's no way a remake will match the sheer intensity and impact of the original. The French treat their horror movies like art, an art at which they're extremely adept. Just walk away, Hollywood. Just walk away.

Unfortunately, this is the only video I could find. It's a shame because it doesn't include the amazing visual imagery inside Anna's mind. This is the imagery I think of when I think of the moment of death. If you're at all a fan of revenge movies, you really must watch this.

4 Tim Messenger  –  Hot Fuzz (2007)  89 points
(7 of 14 lists. (Highest ranking - #3 Doctor Who?)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/kCgVReb585M?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/kCgVReb585M?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Director: Edgar Wright
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost
Gore Factor: Probably one of the higher ones on the list (because the spire replaces his head but he still walks around)
Sad Factor: Depends on how you look at it. It’s sad because out heroes were sad, but Tim Messenger was kind of a dork
Wow/Kickass Factor: SUPER SUPER HIGH

Synopsis:

Hot Fuzz is an awesome movie for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons is that it’s an homage to underrated cop movies like Point Break. The other reason is that there is some amazingly unique scenes in a film that started with two dudes wanting to somewhat copy other cop films. The death of Tim is no exception. Not only does this scene come out of nowhere (and may or may not be possible to actually plan from a physics standpoint) but it’s shocking, gory, and over the top. Just the way a death scene should be
