Every time I see baby "big" cats I desperately want to pick them up and cuddle them while there's still a chance for me to do so unscathed.

My wife, who until now has said we're never getting another cat, is now threatening to get another one. Why? Because we've developed a rat problem recently. I'm a serious cat person and if we didn't already have one and two dogs, I'd be all for it. Unfortunately my cat is getting old and senile and wants to spend all his time outside (perhaps making up for all those years he was a house cat).

Also, aren't terriers supposed to be good rodent hunters? We have a schnauzer mix and although he's fairly young, he's still apparently useless on the hunting front, too.

Yes schnauzers were bred to hunt farmyard vermin, mind you papillons were bred to be companion animals and mine prefer to be solitary watchmen and attempt to kill and/or be shagged by squirrels.

My little rat terrier is insanely good at hunting. She's killed two squirrels despite my best efforts, and nightly stalks crickets that get into the house.

Yeah, that's why I'm so confused that all my animals are such wusses. With a cat and a terrier, I shouldn't have a problem here. They're a little TOO domesticated, I suppose. Or it's a matter of my laziness rubbing off on them . . .

The critters will grow on you.  I started out just a dog and a cat.  That's it.  Five years later, what can another cat hurt?

I have always had a black cat named Baby by my side. Each with long 15-18 year lifespans. I'm currently on Baby III. I think the same soul is jumping from cat to cat to watch over me.

I've always been of the mindset that two is plenty and no more than that. Right now I just have one, because he's a territorial old coot and he never really did like having the other cat in the house when she was alive. But when his time finally comes, I'm bringing in another pair, ideally one that already gets along in whatever shelter I get them from.
