Yeah it doesn't help having a 4000 mile coast along a very active subduction zone :o

A massive 8.1 struck off the southern coast of Mexico near the border with Guatemala a few hours ago with a possible 1 meter tsunami :o
My late wife's family live a couple hundred miles northwest away from the epicenter and from what I can tell they seem to be fine..

Pretty amazing that a 7.0 in a fairly populous place (at least as of the last I read) didn't result in any deaths.

First a 6.1-6.4 yesterday now a 6.9-7.1 in southern California between LA & LV in a dormant volcanic zone on the northwest side of Mojave Desert near Death Valley :o
Could quite possibly be a prelude to an eruption similar to what happened in Hawaii last year..

I really hope everyone is OK out there in California.  :-\

My family is all from California. They and friends have all reported safe. Nothing so much as a few things shifting around. I'm really surprised how minimal the damage has been based on the magnitudes. The last severe earthquake L.A. has had was the devastating Northridge one in '93. Going so long without another has kept people a bit worried, so it's been relieving to hear.

And this isn't to minimalize anyone who has had damage to where they are. I don't know anyone who was close enough to the epicenter for it to really affect them. Maybe just lucky.

So there was a 5.1 earthquake in Sparta NC near the Virginia state line just after 8am and I felt here at my house in northern SC. It was very shallow at just over 2 miles deep.
The house shook for a couple seconds and that was it :o
