Horror Movie a Day: October 2011
« on: September 25, 2011, 10:23:38 PM »
Well, since I seemed to handle it pretty well last year, I figured, what with the Netflix list being brought up, if anyone is up to the challenge of trying again this year.

Basically, all you have to do is watch a horror film a day, and write it down here.  Period.  No prizes, just the glory of accomplishment...though your mileage in calling "watching 31 horror movies" an accomplishment may vary.

There are some basic rules to follow:
1. If you miss a day, that's okay.  If you don't quit right then and there, it is allowable to watch 2 movies in one day to make up for it.  However, the opposite is NOT allowed...you can't watch a second movie ahead of time in preparation in case you miss.

2. There's no need for detailed reviews; all you need is a title.  If you want to write one on here, go right ahead, but no review is REQUIRED.  It's definitely encouraged for the more obscure films, good or bad, since they might be useful for people looking desperately for a film to watch.

3. Since the definition of horror varies, go with your gut on it.  For instance, some consider Silence of the Lambs to be a horror film, while others may view it as a psychological thriller with horror elements.  Dracula: Dead and Loving It is a comedy and parody (and I'll admit, fairly stupid, even though I like it), but is still horror-themed.  Aliens is science-fiction, with more action than its suspenseful predecessor, but still has monsters that come out of the walls.  All of these would most likely fit the requirements without too much trouble.  However, despite what you may think, Barney's Great Adventure does not fulfill the requirements.

4. Franchises count as separate movies.  This isn't a "who can watch only the most obscure" films...it's a horror movie a day.  Thus, if your week is satisfied watching all seven Saw movies, one a day, that counts.  Though you'll probably be sick of anything Saw related afterwards.  Thus, if you have all of the Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Friday the 13th movies, you'll probably be set for the month.  But good luck watching them ever again with a marathon like that.

That's it.  If you're up for the challenge, make a post here, and edit it with your watchables when the time comes.

Now that I think about it...it would be nice to have a little accomplishment banner for anyone who makes it...or maybe a little achievement or trophy list, like the stuff they do on them XBoxes and PS3s.  Maybe something like..."Watched an Italian Zombie film," "Watched 10 movies," "Watched 31 movies without having to make up a day," "Watched an Italian Zombie film...again."  Might be a little added fun for the whole month, give things a little more excitement.

EDIT: And here comes the ones I've done so far:
1: Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) - 1 Death (Ok, I'm officially counting this one; I've passed my totals, it can't be considered a cheat now)
2: Day of the Dead (1985) - 8 Deaths
3: Wolf Blood (1925) - 1 Death
4: Dead Alive (1992)  - 13 Deaths (There's a lot more, but I only counted memorable characters who were officially considered dead at the end)
5: Beetlejuice (1989) - 2 Deaths
6: The Monster Maker (1944) - 1 Death
7: Neon Maniacs (1985) - 15 Deaths (more are implied, but aren't shown)
8: White Zombie (1932) - 2 Deaths (And one faked one)
9: Project Metalbeast: DNA Overload (1994) - 8 Deaths (Might have missed one or two in the middle; I did drift out for a bit)
10: King of the Zombies (1941) - 1 Death
11: The Thing (2011) - 13 Deaths (a few are ambiguous enough not to count)
12: Return of the Living Dead (1985) - 31 Deaths (No, I did not count the "less than 4,000" mentioned at the end of the movie)
13: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) - 0 Deaths (Quite a few podded, but nobody really ends up 'dead' dead)
14: Isle of the Dead (1945) - 7 Deaths
15: Black Sabbath (1963) - 4 Deaths (Ok, next year, if someone important dies and becomes a monster, I'll say the FIRST death is what counts)
16: The Wicker Man (1973) - 1 Death
17: Slither (2006) - 8 Deaths (Plus about, oh, 400 others, but I decided to count principal cast only on this one)
18: Dawn of the Dead (1978) - 20 Deaths (At least, in the Extended and European cuts; pretty sure the original is the same)
19: Suck (2009) - 8 Deaths
20: Phantom of the Opera (1925) - 2 Deaths
21: House on Haunted Hill (1999) - 0 Deaths (According to the rules I set; would be 7 if I had been thinking more clearly)
22: Young Frankenstein (1974) - 0 Deaths (The guard is arguable, but I'll say he just got tossed around a bit)
23: The Blob (1988) - 23 Deaths
24: Blood (2009) - 3 Deaths (Plus two souls trapped in jars; don't ask)
25: The Mummy (1932) - 4 Deaths (Plus one done in during exposition that I didn't count)
26: Eden Lake (2008) - 6 Deaths
27: Maniac/Night of the Living Dead - 8 Deaths in total
28: Dark and Stormy Night (2009) - 8 Deaths (plus 1 offscreen)
29: From Beyond (1986) - 4 Deaths (Plus two who are ambiguous)
30: Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit (2005) - 0 Deaths (but vegetable carnage is through the roof)
31: Van Helsing (2003) - 5 Deaths?  Seriously, this one is very hard to total up who's actually dead and who's just being carried through the air.

Current running 'victim' total: 213 (give or take)

Halloween's my day, October's my month, and horror's my genre... so yes, I'll be doing this one again. Though I will say now that the second weekend of October I'll be out of town at a mystery movie event, so whether or not I watch a horror movie that day is unknown until the projector starts to roll (or maybe I'll squeeze one in in the morning, just to be sure. But I'm getting ahead of myself).

And a list of achievements would be awesome. "Watched 10 vampire movies" "Watched 5 movies with the word Blood in the title" "Convinced a loved one to sit through Piranha 3D with you" (followed swiftly by "Said loved one loves you even more now")... alright, I'll think of better ones in the future, but yeah; I'd be down for such things.

This sounds like a lot of work. I would have to watch a ton of streaming Netflix horror shit to accomplish this.

No prizes? I can't even get an executive stress ball out of this deal or a shitty mocked-up MS-PAINT certificate of accomplishment?!?

I'll try, but I feel like one of those kids who's about to volunteer for a violent schoolyard football-based game.

This sounds like fun, count me in.  It will give me an excuse to watch a bunch of my horror DVDs and BDs that I haven't watched in a while, and some of that I've never watched at all.  I've got a few absolutely awful looking DVDs from horror conventions and this could be a good opportunity to subject myself to them.  I'll probably end up watching over 31 since me and a friend always marathon horror flicks on the weekend of Halloween.

Well, I was going to try and get a list'o'achievements up by tonight, but it might have to be up tomorrow...I had some stuff come up recently that I need to take care of first...but looks so far like a good turn-out this year.

For technical purposes, everything starts at midnight (that is, midnight wherever you happen to be, time zones notwithstanding), so be ready for "The Witching Hour"...BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA! >:D

*ahem*  Sorry, frog in my throat there.  What I meant to say was, let the games begin!  Er, at midnight.

Hmm.  I'd be interested in a different genre.  I've never been a fan of horror.  When they're not scary, they're just boring and predictable.  When they ARE scary, that's a problem too, because I don't like being scared.

What about Romatic Comedy a day in February?  But nothing with Sarah Jessica Parker.  She scares me.

Almost time to go! Got my first title lined up at a theater tomorrow. Not sure how many theatrical offerings I'll try for this month, as I'm not sure how many horror movies worth paying for are coming out this month. Excited for this all the same, of course.

Can't wait to see the Achievement List, especially because I will completely copy it when I post this challenge on another site I frequent ;)

Do you realize how much Netflix streaming cheese I'm gonna have to ingest to accomplish this? I'm gonna be blocked up big time.

EDIT: RiffTrax and iRiffs count, right?

I'd be an idiot NOT to include any of those.  If it's fine to watch a horror-comedy, watching bad horror made funny is also acceptable.
