That's an oil painting...

See, this seriously beats the hell out of every painter we idolize as a culture.

I get that cameras are also imposing a narrative on a scene, etc.  But really, I don't get the point of hyper-realistic paintings like that.

Yeah, I can appreciate the skill required to do it, but don't see the point.  Painting and photography are 2 different arts, making one look like the other isn't all that interesting.  Same with Photoshopping a photo to look like a painting, fun to play with but kind of pointless.

Have any of these been around long enough to age with cracks and such?   Maybe they will look really cool in a few hundred years.

This also is a painting, and it's a little more interesting than the cans as an image, though not as hyper-realistic

Ho Ryon Lee

Would it be just as good as a multiple exposure photo? I don't know. Probably. Sometimes the element of labor adds something to one's appreciation of a piece, like Chuck Close's photo-realistic self portrait (which is also impressive just by being friggin' huge).

Other times it's literally the only aspect, like "1000 Hours of Staring" by Tom Friedman

Whether that kind of thing is meaningful is entirely dependent on your ability or predisposition to appreciate broad poetic ides. But, if you look at an image as a means to get people to think in a different way or to imagine something, then it's at least effective in that way.

I think this one's pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. The artist isn't that well known, but his stuff's pretty great.

that's a disturbing demonstration of topological invariance.
dF = 0
d*F = J

These are wonderful. There is a certain madness that comes over dogs in the presence of tennis balls, isn't there? These pictures capture it perfectly.

The second picture might be my favorite. I didn't even notice the second dog at first, but the look on its face is insane.

Wallace goes absolutely apeshit for tennis balls. It's like sex to a teenager for him.  About 4 times a day he gets "play horny" and I have to satisfy him.  And the more he does it, the more he wants to do it.

I use this toy to aid in taking care of his needs:

Because of this, he has massive thighs.

This is why we can't have nice things.
