You're not far from me then -- sounds like Chester county, unless you're still in the city limits. I'm in Lancaster county. I live in a town but hope to soon live in the woods.

I'm in Delaware county, used to go out to Lancaster a lot when my mom was still alive (Amish country and the antique shops), and when there were stores worth going to at the outlets (Casio, Sony, Coleman).   I still try to get out there once a year to pick up some wine at the Nissley winery shop.

I see a lot of people bashing HDR for being nothing but a gimmicky effect, but I think it's pretty damn cool, especially when it doesn't overwhelm the overall photo.

It's been done for ages.  I guess since it's so much easier to do with digital vs. film it's getting overused a bit.  Used to have to cut out masks to cover up the areas of the paper you didn't want overexposed when making your prints, now since the imaging chip is the limiting factor you need to bracket your exposures and actually use the high and low images and merge them.

For a scene like this it's sort of necessary:


Sunset crater volcano near Flagstaff.  Dark trees, black ground, white clouds, pretty much impossible to get with a single exposure.

I think the bashing started with photos that overused it to the point where it looked more like a video game rendering than a photograph. Unfortunately, like you said, it's likely being overused due to ease, and as a result, I think people are less and less discriminating between "good" and "bad" HDR and just throwing it all under the umbrella of gimmickry.
