Can anyone reccomend a good time-waster game?
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:01:35 PM »
Well for the last couple days we've been waiting for our local mechanics to get a part in so Tyrant's left headlight can work properly. Every day for the last 3 days were supposed to be "The day it should get there" and they'll call "Just as soon as it does." Since Tyrant has to work during the morning, I've been on phone duty for long stretches of time.

While doing that, I noticed I'm lacking a little something from my collection of games. I need a good time-waster. Something like Solitaire or Minesweeper that you play for a while when you're bored, but need to be alert and able to drop it should that important phone call come in. All my games are noisy and immersive (Which I love, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't help me here).

Now I've played the aforementioned Minesweeper and Solitaire to death, and Tetris is always fun for a while, but I'm looking to expand my horizons. What's the current cool pick-up-and-play game? What do you all play when you're waiting for the exterminator to show up or a phone call to come in?

Well for me it's generally Spider Solitaire.

However, there's some other good choices. The Popcap stuff, for example. Bejeweled Blitz (which is about a minute per level) or  Plants vs. Zombies might be good choices. Or go with a turn based game like Civ or Sword of the Stars or Moo, which can be placed on hold at any point and don't require constant attention. Or sound even.

Or just pick up a copy of Angry Birds. It's available all around the place.

If it's on your iPod/iPhone, Pathpix is ridiculously addictive, yet totally easy to play.  It's a lot like Piccross, but with less of the maths.

When I didn't have internet access in Mexico, Solitaire worked for me but I also had Battle Chess downloaded and that would waste all sorts of time for me.. :o

Plant vs Zombies eats up a lot of time without much effort.

I second plants vs zombie.  Quite fun really.  I have always liked tower defense and its a nice little twist on that.

Peggle or Angry Birds have consumed a ton of my time.

I recommend Osu! Takatae! Ouendan! for DS, but if you need quiet, you probably don't want to play it since it's a music based game.

Hmm... I assume you've played the Prof. Layton games?  That seems up your alley and it's an adventure game.

Oh yeah. I'm all over Prof. Layton. Angry Birds is a good time. I'd imagine a touch version would be better, but it's fun to play on my PSP and PS3. I don't feel like playing $20 for the computer version of Pathpix but upon investigation it looks exactly like the Link-a-Pix available at http://www.conceptispuzzles.com .Plants Vs. Zombies is something I've actually had just sitting in my Steam account and haven't really dug into.

Maybe I'll give that one a serious whirl while waiting for the auto shop to call (Again) tomorrow. :^)

If you like the Layton games and have Steam, have you played the Puzzle Agent games? The first one is pretty cheap and is awesome.

Amazingly, GT did a video for this exact purpose.

Bit OT, but if you're a Layton fan, a November release in the US has been announced for the Movie (Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva).  It's pretty much exactly like a game, but with less puzzles (that's right, not no puzzles, less).  It's part of the prequel trilogy that starts with the 4th DS game, that shows how Layton and Luke first met (and presumably also being released in the USA prior to years end), and is then followed by this movie.

Much like the games it's pretty much stand alone, I didn't feel I was missing much by not playing that 4th game first.
