How could they cancel The Chicago Code and leave McFarlen's shows on?  That is it I am done with Fox.

Because more people watch those shows?

That's really the crux of it.  FOX would probably love to have those shows succeed - financially it's much more expensive to launch a new show than it is to keep one that has decent ratings keep going.

The simple fact is that they didn't cancel the shows out of spite, no matter how personal it feels.  They cancelled them because not enough people felt the way you did about the show.

The trouble is Networks don't seem to understand any more that it takes time for people to find a show.  I mean Code was canceled after about 13 episodes, breaking in was only on for about 4,that isn't enough time for people to find a show.

MASH,Bonanza,Cheers,Sienfeld,Hill Street Blues, and many other big hit shows were all rating disasters in their first seasons, but guess what the Networks didn't pull the plug after 12 weeks they gave people a chance to find the shows and they are still making money off of them to this day.  Most hit shows don't become hits unless you give them a full season for people to find the shows and word of mouth to spread about how good they are.

I read that Breaking In was actually doing fairly well in the ratings which is why it was surprising that they didn't renew it.

And there are so many more choices for people nowadays.  Shows have less chance to build an audience because people can go looks elsewhere if it doesn't immediately catch on.

Still, with subpar ratings, shows like Smallville, Supernatural, Chuck, and even Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse got much more airtime than they probably should have had due to their ratings.
