Is that the stuff with the really ancient organisms on it? Bryson talked about these giant piles which are essentially prehistoric life forms that are still alive, somewhere on the western coast.

Hrrmm... I'm on the west coast and am embarrassingly not sure what that would be. Gimme a minute and I'll try to figure it out :P

The only thing I could think of would be The Pinnacles, but if it is, that's the first I've heard of the prehistoric life...

Wow, those are really cool, but that's not what I'm thinking of. I don't have the book anymore so I can't look it up. Dammit, now this is going to bother me.  It was something just off the coast, I think.

Well, here is what we have to offer according to Wikipedia:

Any of those ring a bell?
FINE

This is it. He was talking about the stromatolites there.  Cool, cool stuff.

I'll have to go check it out some time!

I want to use up some vacation time but have nothing to use it for. I used to go to Cedar Point for the weekend, but my usual group can't afford it this year. I was thinking of visiting my dad in Virginia Beach but I think my dad and stepmom just got custody of my step-nephew (?) since my step sister was in rehab (alcohol). I think she lives with them now too. Not exactly something I want to deal with while I'm on "vacation". I suppose I could try to find people that want to go camping in-state. Or just enjoy a week of not working.

My parents are picking up the kids and taking them for the weekend in a few minutes. The wife and I are going to go to Canobie Lake Park tomorrow unless we decide to do something else.

Week...end?

Friday/Saturday/Sunday are the only days that I work both jobs. So really just doing nothing would be fantastic, but I still feel like I need some sort of plans.

Is it on fire? Because if it's not, that's kind of a deal-breaker.

I think it's awaiting approval to be erected actually, the money was raised and the statue created, then things went quiet.

Just a few tips for people going on vacation from a motel worker.

Do not use online services like Priceline or Expedia.  You are not really saving any money, and can get the same deal (or better even) if you contact the hotel directly, or go to their website.  You can also get good discounts if you are an older person, you don't have to be a member of AARP, at our motel its age 55.  Also, AAA and anybody who works for the Governemnt or Military get special rates.  This inclues anybody from teachers, to marines.  Our motel also gives special rates for people traveling in groups.

I want to tell my customers this so bad, but I cannot.  For example, I just a read a review of somebody who stayed at our hotel and booked at Expedia.  They paid over $90 (with taxes) for a weekday rate and were talking about the great deal.  For the same room they could have gone directly through us and  saved over $10.00, this is rack rate, with no other discounts.  They probaby also don't realize that the motel will only see about $62 of what they paid.  The rest goes to the online booking company.

Also look for those travel guides found at rest stops and vistior centers.  With one of these coupons (walk ins only though) they could have saved $30!
