Only thing I'd add is Grave of the Fireflies and Ghost In the Shell

EDIT:  One more thing to add about TGWLTT. Just found out it was the first film to win Best Animated Movie at the Japanese Oscars, and the director's follow-up film (Summer Wars) won this past year.  Neat!  Anyone seen that one?

Grave of the Fireflies is a Ghibli film, so I had that one as well. I have not seen Ghost in the Shell. I actually have a copy of Summer Wars on my computer, but it's too big for my laptop to handle so I haven't seen it. I did hear that Funimation is bringing it to theaters stateside.
Wow.  Is GotF Studio Ghibli? How bout that. I saw Ghost In the Shell a few months ago. I thought it'd be overhyped since I've heard about it for so long.  Actually kinda glad that I saw it now that I'm older so I can have a deeper appreciation of it (pretty sure I wouldn't have had I watched it in high school).

Yeah, GotF was released as a double feature w/My Neighbor Totoro (I don't know why - I read the reason somewhere, but I can't remember it...)

I still think the Standalone Complex series is the better of the GitS franchises (its first season managed to make an entirely expository episode where everyone's sitting in a chatroom the whole time watchable!), but the original movie's still damn good.

I'm betting that GotF was the first film on that bill and it was paired with Totoro because it'd stop people wanting to hang themselves afterwards.  :)

Still, that's one hell of a combination.

Found the reason for the double-bill:

Quote
The movie was originally intended as a sort of front act of another Ghibli movie, My Neighbor Totoro. Ghibli's parent company reasoned that Totoro's tie-in with a movie with more educational merit would guarantee its inclusion in the list of summer's recommended movies for school children.

So, basically, it was an after-school special.

Speaking of Summer Wars, it's having a theatrical run here and it's being nominated for Best Animated Feature as well.

Here's my list (so far).  Contrary to this thread's title, I've included a range from 'what I liked' to 'what I didn't like', so people can compare tastes (and possibly find that everything they like fits in one of my other categories, so they may find something they'd enjoy in there with it).

A limitation for me is that - because of the head injuries - I can't read for more than about 15 minutes without DAYS of recovery necessary.  So anything not available with an English dub is out of the question for me.

Excellent (i.e. 'have already bought' or 'will buy' on DVD or Blu-Ray because I know I'll re-watch them):
Ghost in the Shell [liked both GiT:SAC series for character and for density of plot, not so much the original films]
Cowboy BeBop, including both the series and the film  [especially for characterization, though plots were good and often fun/funny, first learned of Yoko Kanno here]
Mirobito  [especially for characterization]
RIN Daughters of Mnemosyne  [fascinatingly different, if one can get past the torture in the first episode(s)]
Kiki's Delivery Service [quite the contrast to the anime' directly above ;) ]

Quite good, but not Great:
Read or Die (not quite in 'excellent', though I own the film)
Ponyo
Fullmetal Alchemist (prefer the new one currently airing on Adult Swim to the original; has a 'fuller' plot [not as tightly linked to just the brothers])
Birdy the Mighty Decode (liked both, second series more than the first)
The Sacred Blacksmith

Liked slightly more than 'OK' (enough to watch to the end):
Big O
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Eureka Seven
Princess Mononoke
Blood+
Kurau Phantom Memory

OK, but nothing special (i.e. 'I lost interest and usually couldn't finish the series' [if it was a series; if it was a film I watched it to the end]):
Bleach (became really repetitive after the first storyline)
Inuyasha
Code Geass - Lelouch Of The Rebellion
Sekirei
Night Walker
Appleseed
Vampire Hunter D
Paranoia Agent
Hellsing
Madlax
Night Walker
Read Or Die, the TV
Record of Lodoss War
The Melancholy of Haruhu Suzumiya
Witch Hunter Robin
Trinity Blood

Did not like:
Please Teacher [seriously creepy pedophilic 'love' story]
Lupin III
FLCL  ['Fooly Cooly']
Death Note
Samurai Champloo
Desert Punk
Chrome Shelled Regios
3x3 Eyes
Space Adventure Cobra
[ANY of the 'fight/contest' oriented series I've seen parts of; e.g. DragonBall Z]

Have to disagree with you on Lupin III. I found it to be a compelling heist-anime. It was always interesting, the characters are compelling, and the capers always have an awesome twist to them.

If you'll notice, it was listed under "Did not like".  It was NOT under "This Anime' Sucked".  Therefore, if you 'disagree', then technically you are disagreeing with me not liking it, and - I'm sorry to say - I know what I like better than you do.  ;)

[Now if you'd said, "interesting you had that response to it, I liked it", that would've been different.]

just want to say any miyazaki film, with spirited away being best.  Also cowboy bebop is the best series.

I love the Read or Die OAV but the TV series is pretty disappointing in a lot of ways.  Not bad, but not nearly as fun or charming.  Also, if you like the main character of Read or Die, she doesn't show up until near the end and they sort of stuff her into the background.

Ones I liked: (own on DVD)

Ruroni Kenshin
Blue Gender - good monster movie style anime. Think Aliens.
FLCL - just plain strange
Ghost Stories - Watch the dub. It is a hilarious gag dub of an otherwise ho-hum series.
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun - Just plain awesome.
YuYu Hakusho
DB/DBZ/DBGT

Liked (Don't own):
Big O!

Currently watching:
Best Student Council
Prince of Tennis (season 1 on my Ipod)

Sadly, it's only a WTF moment because there was supposed to be a third season, but that never happened.
