They were consistent in the fact that every single event from the original happened in this one. Kalibos didn't need to exist in this version, but they had to throw him in there, along with giant scorpions, etc. That's what annoyed me the most about this version. Make a new movie, whatever, but if you're going to change everything, then have the guts to CHANGE it. They got rid of the plot, characterization, and logic from the original (all superior), but kept all the events, even ones that didn't fit or make sense. Ugh.

Careful....I tried to make these same points about the reboot of Star Trek and got lambasted....   :D

Of course Hollywood likes to take things people remember from the original movie they're doing a mangling of and blend it in with crap.

Changing things for the better requires talent, skill, imagination, intelligence, any idiot can take something and poop out a crappy new version...  Uh, what was my point.........

Ah, yes, Hollywood executives.  Watch that insanely long documentary on Blade Runner sometime, the money guys were the ones that had the crappy narration put in, even Harrison Ford thought it was stupid while he was recording it, but the executives forced it in because they didn't understand the movie.  They also killed the poignant  "5 good years is better than nothing" idea for the ending and tacked on that happy ending.

Dare I bring up Brazil at this point?

But the problems with remakes is that these "geniuses" don't want to be seen as just taking someone else's work and re-doing it (Gus Van Sant being the exception).  They think they HAVE to change anything and everything or they'll be seen as pointless.  Problem comes when you get someone who can't tell the good things from the bad in a film and so everything gets trashed.

Well they did leave out the entire "suitors having to answer a riddle for Andromeda's hand, or die trying" aspect. Which actually constituted a lot more of the movie than I remembered; about a third. Basically everything between Perseus arriving in Joppa/Argos and them setting out on the quest is removed from the remake. Which constitutes a pretty large portion of the movie.

Having said that, I agree with you on every other point. It really bugged me how they tried to jam Calibos into the movie, even though all of his backstory/motivation from the original was either gone completely, or had to be ripped off from other characters.

The only thing I preferred about the remake (other than the special effects, which were of course better, though I do have a certain nostalgia for stop motion), is the fact that the soldiers that accompanied Perseus had much more personality in the remake. In the original they had no names, almost no lines, and their faces were almost always covered.

And I just want to say, Andromeda was way prettier and cuter in the original, but maybe that's just me. I had a serious crush on her as a kid.

Plus, now instead of being the spoiled son of a goddess, he's a damned king who still has a bug up his butt about his wife being fooled into making love to another man (these guys watch Excalibur much?)

I had to love Tim PIgott-Smith as a Tom Baker era "Doctor Who" fan (The Masque Of Mandragora).

You've seen the BBC's "Count Dracula", yes?

True. I just know that while I watched the new one, I kept thinking "Where are the new scenes/events?" So while it didn't take every scene from the original, it felt (to me) that there wasn't a scene/event that took place that didn't come from the original. I'm sure I'm wrong in some ways, but the point is that nothing seemed new or unique to this version. It was a remake of every plot point, with less characterization and a weaker overall plot.

As to the secondary characters having more screen time/development, I'd say yes and no. Yeah, they said more and did more. But I still had no clue who they were, nor did I care when any of them died. Giving a character lines doesn't develop a character, it just eats up time (at least that's what these idiots did). So I'd have to vote for the original again because I cared about the characters equally when original didn't even bother to do anything with them. That's how bad the re-make was to me.
