Now that SoMI is finally out on the PS3, I really want to play it. But at the same time I'm conflicted, because there is no demo, and I refuse on principle to buy a download only game without a demo first (because you can't sell it to some other sucker if it sucks, like you can with a physical disc).

I'm... ashamed to admit that I've never actually played a Monkey Island game, though I know a lot about it and loved adventure games back in the day. I did all the King's Quests, as well as several Lucas Arts games (original Sam and Max, Fate of Atlantis, etc.). It really ought to be a no-brainer, but it just BUGS me that Sony is so bad about putting out demos at the same time as release (or sometimes, putting one out at all). It really seems like they know nothing about marketing or hype sometimes. :P

I'm in the same boat.  I want to try it, but would rather play a demo first before I drop any money on it despite the really good things I have heard about it.

Well, if you're still undecided, see if this quote will convince you...

It's the best blind purchase you could possibly make, but if you want a taste, you could always download the demo for the old PC version here:

http://www.neophilia.de/MonkeyIsland/demo1.html

Then go to http://www.scummvm.org and download their emulator to try the PC version, or follow the instructions on the first site to emulate the amiga version of the demo.

The version that just came out is the same thing, but with prettier graphics and voice acting. (If you want)  :^)

Telltale also has demos of the new Monkey Island games (obviously not the exact same game, but the same in spirit)

But you've played Sam and Max, so I think you can safely pick up Monkey Island without a demo.
FINE

I'm aware that I *can*. :)

I will almost certainly like it, that's not really the question.

I just have a long-standing and deep-seeded dislike of purchasing anything that I haven't tried if it can't be returned.

You want a demo? LucasArts will give you a demo...IN YOUR BROWSER.

I think where Pak and I went wrong is that he doesn't actually want try the game so much as he wants to complain about Sony.

So far the game is pretty fun.  I'm only playing it here & there while taking a break from the project I'm working on that's due by the end of the day.  (My deadline.  Actual deadline is 7:30 AM on Monday.)

Well if anyone hasn't picked up the new Monkey Island games, you can get a bundle with all the Tales of Monkey Island games AND the Special Edition Secret of Monkey Island for $19.95. That's less that you'd normally pay for Tales alone. Offer ends May 6.  :^)

I haven't played Force Unleashed and don't expect to play the second one any time soon...but I still see this as good news. I was afraid the new regime change at LucasArts would mean a return to ignoring the classics. This is a hopeful sign.
