Last week, we brought word of a rumored new Airbender series -- Avatar: The Legend of Korra -- thinking, "hey, Avatar fans will really get a kick out of this!" Instead it opened up a world of questions from the dedicated followers of the animated epic. Here's what we know so far -- according to the folks at Avatar: The Last Airbender Online (and thusly confirmed in an interview with Racebending.com), The Legend of Korra will take place 100 years down the road from the current continuity, focusing on Korra, a Waterbender who will be trained by Aang. Original series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko will be on board to helm the new series, but other than that, we're still waiting on when and where the new series will be officially announced (one would assume San Diego Comic-Con, but Dimartino told Racebending.com he hoped it would be sooner), as well as the details. After posting our original story, the comments blew up with some pretty solid questions, for instance:* How can there be two Avatars? Does this mean Aang has died and will be Korra's Spirit Guide (a la what Roku was to Aang)?* Will we learn the future of Aang? Did he wind up settling down with Katara? Did they have a family?* What will be the main conflict this time around?* And lastly, how much of this can really be believed? After all, no one has gone on record with any hard facts (short of the title of the series, which has been confirmed)? Some interesting queries for sure, and certainly some conversation/debate starters. That "comment" option is down there for a reason, Airbender fans -- let's hear what you have to say!
We've only got an official schedule for the first day and already this year's San Diego Comic-Con is on course to completely shutdown the Internet with breaking news and announcements - and we're hoping one of them is related to a just-shy-of-officially-confirmed new Airbender animated series. Our comrades over at Avatar: The Last Airbender Online have compiled all known information about the rumored series titled Avatar: Legend of Korra, which is believed to take place one-hundred years after The Last Airbender and focus on the titular female Waterbender, who Aang would take under his wing.According to Airbender Online, series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko are on board. The only question remaining is when and **ahem"" where the new series will be announced. The logicial conclusion is SDCC. Dimartino and Kinietzko recently told Racebending an official announcement would "hopefully" come sooner than Comic-Con but we're getting awfully close. What do you think Airbender fans? Are you ready to meet the girl who would be the new Avatar?
It shouldn't come as a surprise, but this Airbender fan (the TV show, not the movie, if I even had to clarify) can't help but jump at any and all spin-off info. After a panel of esteemed TV and film composers, I was able to shoot Airbender's composer Jeremy Zuckerman questions about The Legend of Korra, and if he would return to score the show. Thankfully, his response was quick: absolutely.Sounds like as long as Nickelodeon gets all their contracts in order (um, Nick, hurry up), we'll be hearing more of Zuckerman's eclectic musical stylings backing up a whole new group of characters. He hasn't started work yet, so we're not sure what new sounds and ideas he'll be playing with, but having been known to endlessly loop the original show's music over and over, I'll wait to hear whatever he delivers.During the panel, Zuckerman also mentioned that when they first did the pilot, he was helping to produce both the music and the sound design, and most of the "bending" effects are actually just Zuckerman making noises into a microphone. So next time you're pretending to water bend in a pool, the "whoosh" sound you're making is pretty close to the show's effects. Cool!Make sure to keep checking in, as we're hunting down all the info on The Legend of Korra, because that's just what rabid fans do.Now, back to riding on my ball of air.
Great news, Airbender fans! We had a chance to catch up with Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at the Nickelodeon booth on the Comic-Con floor to get a host of new details on The Legend of Korra! We've had a lot of interest in our coverage of the series thus far, and made sure to clear up lingering questions burning up the fans minds! Be sure to post your comments and feedback below! Here's what we found out:Quote-As mentioned , the cabbage merchant will not appear, but "his legacy will be present in some form."-As an evolution of the first series, The Legend of Korra will have more sophistication to it, but still keep the humor, fun hybrid animals, and action. It won't cover more mature subject material necessarily, just different mature subjects. "It won't be another war, but a different sort of conflict."-On whether or not we'd see a love interest for Korra: "We love that stuff. We're total cornballs, we love cheesy teen romance. Rest assured, there's plenty or romance happening in the story, but it's the same balance of ingredients that we like."-Katara IS in fact the mother of Aang's offspring, who will be central to the show. "We didn't mean for it to be a big super-secret, that they end up together."-On the persecution of Airbenders being compared to the X-Men registration act: "We'll see something like that, but in sort of a different structure."-Will it be a very different world from where we left off? "Yes and no, the world has definitely changed, and evolved, and advanced, but we're very conscious of keeping the same feeling. Not totally different, but it's definitely generations later."-"There will definitely only be one Avatar at a time, and it is Korra."-So will Aang have any kind of presence? "Yes...in his way."-DiMartino and Konietzko will continue to work with Joaquim Dos Santos and Ryuki Hung, working to improve the design and animation.-The Legend of Korra will in fact be a mini-series, with Michael and Bryan directly writing each episode.-"As a mini-series, it's going to be really tight. While we really love the filler episodes, those are some of our favorites, this thing is just lean and mean. It's a really cool driving story."
