The last couple of episodes of The Simpsons I've seen - Homer takes Marge to her childhood holiday spot and 3 Tales of Revenge - were both pretty funny.  I'm currently catching up through the (fantastic) box sets.  I'm on season 7 and it's brilliant.  Lisa is awesome.  The main difference I've noticed between then and now is the slightly riskier edge that The Simpsons has now (or perhaps it's just TV in general) - there's a joke in the newest episode where Homer (as the Count of Monte Cristo) asks his cellmate (Mr Burns) why he's giving him the gift of freedom, and Burns replies "Perhaps it's because I've been violating you in your sleep."  :)

It's edgier because it has Family Guy and American Dad and all the Cartoon Network shows to compete with.

I just want them to go back to normal. Like Season 8 normal.

I think they've run out of stuff to write for that style.

My biggest beef with the new stuff is not only the crass edge that has permeated the last few seasons, but that Homer has become much more smart and calculated, as opposed to being a loveable oaf. I liked him much more when he was dumb. The writers changed his character to one who's much more smart and really a jerk.

Yeah. I couldn't think of what else it was, but that's exactly it. I want my OAF!

MY beef with the new Simpsons is that it's become too "issue-based" (as opposed to character/situation-based, like it was back when it was actually funny).
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Yeah the anti Iraq War bits in a couple of the episodes have irked me a bit. Not for the point of view, but of the fact they are in the episode at all. They have also been real heavy handed and not really funny.

I agree about the simpsons... since 2001 or so it has only been sporadically funny and NEVER the brilliant show it was from seasons 3 - 11

I don't think every episode for 8 seasons was brilliant. How many clip shows are in there? Those always stink. Every season has its share of stinkburgers.

The clip shows were funny, they had pretty damn good underlying stories, not just people sitting around a coffee table saying "Remember the time we were in that senior citizen dance-off?". And honestly, I have seasons 4 thru 9 here right now and great episodes were VERY abundant in those seasons, MAYBE 1 out of 15 shows were not that funny, but that's a much higher ratio than the majority of shows that have been on TV.

After almost 20 years on the air, I'm amazed that the show is still as funny as it is. Granted, from season 3 until somewhere in the season 7 or 8 timeframe they put out some of the best stuff ever done in the half hour format... but that level can't last forever. They haven't been nearly as sharp over the last 5-7 years and some episodes outright stink... Even if the Simpsons have lost their best fastball (the family "sitcom" based stuff) they still hold on with a variety of breaking balls and offspeed junk (the "insert characters into literary classics" and "concentrate on secondary characters" stuff).

I'm approaching the feature film with cautious optimism.

Even their worst episode is still better than most of the stuff on TV today.
