The big thread of unsearchable questions
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:31:56 AM »
Remember when you were a kid, and you wanted to know how to spell a word, so you'd ask an adult, and they didn't know, but they wanted to disguise their lack of knowledge in the form of giving you a life-skill, so they told you to look it up, and you'd get out the dictionary and realize you didn't know what to look up because you didn't know how to spell the word? The Internet can be like that sometimes, so I thought I'd open up this thread for those answers that the Internet can't help you with because you don't know the question.

Like, for instance, there's an instrument that shows up in a lot of Japanese video games and anime that sounds kind of like a Cuckoo Clock being rhythmically strangled. It's often paired with whistles whenever the music is trying to capture a tropical vibe. You can hear it kick in with the drums at about the 56 second mark in this Mario Galaxy song:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/h0EiX-Kq_BY&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/h0EiX-Kq_BY&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;</a>

Now it's not just a computery-noise because I've heard it in orchestrated music before. Does anyone know what's making that noise?

Rhythmically Strangled Cuckoo Clock. Sounds like a band name.

Hmm, sorry what was your question? Oh, sorry, don't recognise the instrument.

I'm not sure which one it is, I didn't hear something matching your description in that vid, do you have another example?

I think I know the noise you are talking bout, and am going to say xylophone.

Or just steel drums I guess...that is what they use for a lot of tropical music.

Hmmmm...I can give you an example and rick roll you at the same time :)

Not the percussion noise. The kind of chokey whistley noise in the background. I'll see if I can find a better example..

UPDATE

OK. Here in the goron song you can hear it kick in around the 8 second mark. Not the bongos, and not the steel drums.

And here's the live version. It starts at 10 seconds.

...it's some kind of electronic pad or percussion thing. There's a sound just like it in the percussion bank on my ancient Casio keyboard.

EDIT: According to the manual, it's a "Computer Game Sound."

I think TTYT may be partially correct, it's more likely than not an electronic representation of an actual instrument, but I'd venture to say it's perhaps a Sho.*

I can't actually write the name properly since it requires a character the forum code doesn't recognize.

Medeski Martin and Wood use it a bunch.  It's an actual instrument.  I think it's the same thing anyway.  Try looking in the song Partido Alto at around 2:40.

The music video is here.  http://www.mmw.net/av.jsp  Or you can just search for the song on grooveshark.  Going to do a little more research when i get a chance

You bastard... stealing my thunder.  Couldn't get it off my mind so I spent a good 45 minutes looking as well, and just found it.  I'm pretty sure it's the Cuica as well.  Here's a good video.

We have a winner! I've spent years wondering what the thing that made that sound looked like. And now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

So yeah, if anyone else has any hard-to-search-for questions feel free to throw them on here.

You bastard... stealing my thunder.

Sorry for the thunder theft... Once I heard that live version that Pac had linked... I knew I was only one degree of separation away via that Beastie Boys song, so I ran with it. :)

I like this thread, so I'm going to bring it back with another question that is bugging me.  Posted this in the onion thread too, but maybe this will get different traffic.

Did anyone see the onion news network a few days ago about this new hot artist who had a show at a gallery, which was just all her drawings on the backs of notebooks she did because she was bored in class?  Maybe I'm going crazy and I didn't actually see it on the onion, but I can't find it anywhere anymore.  Did they take it down for some reason?  Did it ever exist?  Anyone know what I'm talking about?  It's weird how stuff can just disappear on the internet.

Once upon a time, my aunt had this device which sort of cored and spiral sliced apples.  You would sort of impale the apple on this core sized plug, then turn a crank.  The apple would rotate and push forward, while a knife would press into the side of the apple and slice it.  It's tough to describe.

Any idea where I could find one of those?  I asked my aunt where she got hers, but it was a long time ago and she can't remember.
