Is this typical quality?
« on: March 30, 2010, 09:50:09 AM »
Hey guys, checking out my first Rifftrax here and.. jesus christ it's so grating. It feels like all the quips were pre-recorded and there's a guy with a soundboard just firing them off. What I mean is it doesn't sound like guys in a room ragging on the show, which is what I expected. Just feels too artificial and, at the risk of repeating myself, grating.

Is the I Am Legend rifftrax typical of the quality and approach of these things?

thanks

Well it's about middle of the line.  It's been a while since I watched that one.  But yeah, I would say that's about normal.

The I Am Legend riff wasn't one of my favourites, I must admit.  Panimu, I'd recommend trying out something a little cheesier to being with, that's a little more like the MST3k films they used to do, and see if that suits you.

Maybe try some of the shorts until you get used to audio only riffing. That does take some getting used to.

Definitely.  The shorts are more in the vein of what MST3K was, so would be better for making the transition.  Other cheesy stuff such as Planet of Dinosaurs, Voodoo Man, and Troll 2 are the full length equivalent, and are available as video on demand purchases, fully synced already.

After that, audio only renditions of really terrible movies like The Room and Battlefield Earth are MUCH better than I Am Legend.

Get used to audio only riffing? I listen to lots of radio comedy and I'm sorry but that was awful. Clearly scripted, but badly delivered to boot.

Well this isn't exactly radio comedy.  It wouldn't make sense if you tried to listen to a riff without the movie.

It's unfortunate that you didn't like I Am Legend.  This product isn't for everyone.  I think that MST3K suffered from the same problem; some episodes were stuffed with bad jokes and poor delivery, some were fantastic.

Well, it's scripted... and it's been scripted since Comedy Central season one of MST3k. So... unless your riff was out of synch with the movie and the lines just seemed to happen randomly, I don't know what the problem is. I think this one's pretty funny since the movie is full of absurdities.

From what I've heard, IAL wasn't their best work. But then again, humor is subjective.

However if it's the delivery and stuff that you didn't like, that sounds to me like more of a personal preference. I've never known the guys to sound like they were "phoning it in" so to speak with regard to the delivery of their lines.

If I were you I'd give the Matrix, Twilight, Transformers, or any of the older, cheesier movies & shorts a try before you write them off completely.

*ahem* Uh, I think you should buy ALL of the riffs before you write them off completely. Right, Torgos? RIGHT? *WINKWINK*
