List off other pop-culture riffers!
« on: March 17, 2010, 05:19:10 AM »
I was just listening to the hilaaarious Creed Shreds 3 video, and I had this flash of all MST3k-style riffing that's in pop culture.  So, excluding MST3k/RT/CT, let's list them, shall we?  The criteria is...
1.) using other people's content, and
2.) replacing the original audio with something a lot funnier.  And...... GO!

The "Shred" Videos
Literal Music Videos
VH1's Pop-Up Video <--(Bending Rule #2 here)
ALTV's music videos
DJO - Happy In Paraguay
Cats Talking

I would say That Guy With the Glasses comes awfully close, so he can't not go unnoticed.  He deserves at least an honorable mention.

If you haven't seen or heard of any of the above, as a fan of MST3k/RT/CT, I hiiiighly recommend them!

So... what else am I missing?  Bonus points for links and embedding!

Steve Smith's Playhouse From the creator and star of The Red Green Show (and nothing like Pee Wee's Playhouse)

Not sure if this counts, but Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

What's Up, Tiger Lily, of course.
Ooh, good call.

And closer to Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (directed by Carl Reiner? I didn't know that. Need to watch soon), Kung Pow: Enter the Fist

Haven't heard of Steve Smith's Playhouse.  Apparently not many people have (couldn't find any videos on YouTube for it).

No mention of Cheap Seats?!

It's the exact same formula as MST3K except they watch old sports shows.  Mike, Kevin, and Bill even made a cameo once.

Mad Movies with the LA Connection

They took movies, edited out the audio, re-edited it for length, and then inserted their own dialog. I remember Night of the Living Dead showing up as one episode and an old gangster movie redone with the roles being played by Ricky and Lucy Ricardo.

It is a Canadian show, and I don't think it lasted too long.

Cool tip about the Mad Movies.  I look forward to watching them on YouTube (there's a healthy dose there).

I just remembered Whose Line's Film Dub game!  That's easily one of my favorite games they do, but they rarely do it.  My guess is that they fear audiences think it's pre-planned.

Occasionally they do movies that MST3k riffed.  Neat!

Wasn't very good.  I kind of liked the premise though, in which Steve would replace the voice of only one character, rather than all.

ALTV's music videos

Al did the same thing for Canada's Much Music (Al Music) which I loved to death.  I doubt there's too much difference, although I do remember a great sketch extolling the virtues of Canada, as well as finding a town that almost bears his name.

In my opinion, there was a time (much of the 90's) where Much Music was better than MTV (keep in mind, I haven't seen very much so I'm basing this a lot of hearsay) due to the fact that they were MUCH more music-centric and felt more like it's own entity rather than simply MTV Canada.  That said, at that time, MTV was producing some very good animated shows.  While Much Music sucks now, at least it held onto music longer.

I always loved Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC).  But then again I'm dumb and immature.  ;D
