You have to balance what makes sense to us as people with what is narratively satisfying and what is practical.  Sure, they could have gone to a hotel, but since the result would have been the same, as established several times, then going to a hotel would only have been a waste of screen time. 

They could have gone to a church. Yes, it wouldn't helped the movie plot or budget to go there, but going to that big place where demons are unlikely to go might have helped them stay alive.

My main problem with the film was pretty simple: I find it much more entertaining to watch someone who is proactive towards their bad situation than someone who is accelerating it. Micah seemed to be the type who if he found an angry-looking King Kong in a cage would immediately go look for a stick with which to poke him. And while having an idiot in the lead doesn't make it a bad film, it does lessen my enjoyment of it.

Well said, Compound, that's exactly how I saw it.

While I was watching this, I was exasperated with the couple's lack of self preservation, to the point where I really hoped something bad would happen to them.  From their experience, I learned:

-There is only ONE person who could possibly attempt an exorcisim in the San Diego area (so...no priests or other psychics in the area?), and if he goes on vacation while you've got an infestation, you're screwed.

-I learned that if you're threatened by a demon, then you should not try to leave your house and seek shelter in a church. 

-When a demon is leading you in a certain direction (by slamming doors, opening hatches into attics, etc), don't try to resist or leave the area.  You should go where the demon wants you to (by opening the doors, crawling through the attic hatch, etc).

-When someone says that they want to leave or that it's time to leave, what they really mean is that they're going to stay.

Yeah, the whole "why is it taking so long" was a big question I had as well. Sure, apparently it's been around messing with her for years, but even then it's not really doing much. The abilities we see this demon having (even before the actual possession), it seems like it is not doing as much as it could to mess with her, and taking it's sweet time for no reason.

I learned that the Demon wasn't so bad after all. I mean, the demon DID take care of the douche bag known as Mika. And it DID free the chick FROM his douche bagginess. Way to go demon!!

I agree too.  I can handle a douchebag protag (or I wouldn't be a fan of Lost) but they have to at least be proactive.  OMFG  When they're a douchebag AND passive, doesn't make for much empathy.

You know what's sad, is how many times I watched this before I realized Katie was posessed when she convinced Micah to stay towards the end of the film (I don't pay much attention to the actual movie when I watch these). It does make one wonder though: If the demon wanted them to stay, maybe leaving would have helped after all.

Also again, I actually did think The Blair Witch Project tapes were real. Briefly. I heard about The Blair Witch from some TV special, before I learned it was a movie. I'm not proud of this fact.
