The Harry Potter Series
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:17:18 PM »
With the 7th and final Harry Potter book on its way this year(July, we hope) I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion of all things Potter.

Which is your favorite book? Favorite Passage? Favorite Quote?

So far, my favorite book is book 5: The Order of the Phoenix. I love the way the students band together to fight the common enemy. Plus, it has Fred and George Weasley's triumphant flight from Hogwarts!

My favorite chapter(s) is probably in book 6: The Half-Blood Prince. I love all the Voldemort backstory and flashback chapters.

I'm metaphoricially clamping my hands over my ears and shouting "LALALALALALALALALALALALALALA! CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" Lest I spoil the movie series for myself.   ;)

Right you are, Ken.

er, Aves.   ;)

Spoilers are a probability, and any blatant spoiler should be posted using the lovely "spoiler tag" that torgosPizza has so lovingly provided for us.

I tried to keep my first post as vague as possible, but this thread is all-encompassing, so there's bound to be some discussion of the entire series.

I'd suggest that you read the books/watch the movies before reading. The surprises throughout the series are just too damn good to spoil! I write this as a mega Potter fan. I love the books more than any other I've ever read, and the movies are not too shabby either. I am just dying with anticipation to finally read the 7th book!!!

a good warning to any newbies to the series, also.. the books become dangerously addicting.. I spent hours every day reading them because I was so caught up in Harry's world

the sixth book is a real tear jerker... somebody very important dies, but I will not say who.. and there's such massive twists to the story that'll just wow you.

I found myself at certain times nearly shouting "No!" at a shocking event, or pausing with my mouth gaping in aw before realizing I was just reading a book..

and 'Ken' ? De heck?!?

"Right you are, Ken" is a staple of MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge.

I take it you never watched...

Order of the Phoenix is probably my favorite book so far. I can't wait for the film.

I still have to go with Prisoner of Azkaban as my favorite book.  There are lots of moments in the other books to praise, but Azkaban, for me, is the best of the bunch.

Same here. She's so deliciously evil! Have you seen the pics of her from the movie? She's played by Imelda Staunton, and she looks supremely vicious!

Personally, I just can't buy the dementors. They're overpowered, over the top, they don't work.

First, they feed by taking people's souls out, and making their empty bodies into dementors themselves, right? Muggles can't even see them. The only way to fight a dementor is the Patronus spell, a very advanced magic few wizards can master, and even then it just repels and subdues. Nothing apparently can destroy a dementor.

So, why aren't they ruling? Logic says that anytime there's the slightest faltering in the wizard community, the dementors would swamp the world and create a supernaturally charged omega-man type situation.
Love doesn't hurt. It kills.

I think the dementors can be beaten off in other ways, or can be destroyed in other ways, that just werent mentioned.

well in some ways they are better than nazgul, Ie, the saddness/coldness aura.  However they dont seem to be much smarter than orcs at the best animals at the worst, so nazgul are better for running an army
