The Unusuals
« on: May 16, 2009, 06:28:38 AM »
Finally started watching The Unusuals in an effort to clear off the DVR.

Gotta say, it's alot better than I expected it would be.  And the soundtrack is great.  Loving the dispatch bits as well.

Anyone else watching?

Me.  I like Amber Tamblyn (loved Joan of Arcadia), and at least the quirky comedy aspect of police procedurals is relatively fresh, as opposed to something like Southland, which is NYPD Blue, but less good and with high-def cameras.

Don't mean to be Mr. Negative, but I love Southland and really didn't care for this.  I watched the first two episodes and really had to force myself to get through the second one.  It didn't feel real to me and I couldn't get into any of the characters.  The whole feel of the show felt too eighties or something.

Southland, on the other hand, felt believable and interesting.

I think it's intentionally that way.  Kinda like the Beastie Boys video for Sabatoge (only not quite as cheesy).

I liked Southland at first, but there are so many characters that don't interest me, and it's very heavy-handed show, too.  It screams, "HEY! I'M REALISTIC, DAMMIT! LOOK AT ALL THE FAKE CURSING WE DO!"

Oh, and The Unusuals has been cancelled.

Crap.  Oh well.  One less show clogging up my DVR next season I guess.

Quote
"The Unusuals" explores both the grounded drama and comic insanity of the world of New York City police detectives. It helps to have a twisted sense of humor, since every day could be your last. Detective Casey Shraeger (Amber Tamblyn) has just been transferred to the NYPD's Homicide unit from Vice, and is instantly thrown into a setting of bullets and bodies. As she begins her new assignment, Casey finds that the squad is full of secrets....which serves her well, since she's keeping a few of her own.

Created by Noah Hawley (co-producer of Bones), ABC's short-lived series The Unusuals starred Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Harold Perrineau ("Michael" on Lost), Adam Goldberg (Deja Vu), Monique Gabriela Curnen (The Dark Knight), Joshua Close (The Day the Earth Stood Still), Kai Lennox (He's Just Not That Into You) and Terry Kinney (The Mentalist, Oz). The hour-long dramedy ran this past springtime, and had 10 episodes produced before it was canceled. During the show's short run, guest stars included Chris Sarandon, Joanna Gleason and Shelley Berman.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment hasn't made a formal announcement, but they have confirmed for us that The Unusuals will be coming to DVD in the near future as an Amazon exclusive title; you can pre-order it now at that link. List price is $29.95 SRP, but you can lock in your copy right away at a discount. The ship date is not provided at this time; instead the entry says "This title has not yet been released. You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives." Our thanks to each of our readers who e-mailed us, to make sure we had seen the Amazon listing. No package art, specs or details about the contents are available yet, either, but stay tuned and we'll update you just as soon as we know anything further!
