Actually, I should mention that I liked the Saw movies, though again, the constant tragic endings bothered me there too.  Saw 6 though, had a tremendous schadenfreude factor.

I kinda liked the first two SAW movies OK, but the third one was so crappy I never watched any of the others.

Also I thought I should say: A good portion of horror films do have somewhat happy endings. So even non-happy endings are still "shocking" as some might say

This was totally in line with every other Sam Raimi directed horror flick. All 3 of the Evil Dead movies ended with a downbeat ending. (Even AOD if you watch the director's cut). I would have been completely disappointed if Drag had an upbeat ending.

I figured that the movie's title and poster were dead giveaways as to how the story was going to end. That and the Director is Sam Raimi... if he ever makes a film called 'The Happening' you better believe everything that could possibly happen will happen by the time the credits roll.

I love this thread...

Would it have killed them to have a happy ending?  I guess having happy endings is anathema to horror movies.

&

Ugh, I think a spoiler alert would have been nice there!

I feel so bad for Bob, but Thirfty's post made me laugh my ass off. That defines spoiler alright!  :D

Fantastic movie, fantastic ending.

Yes, yes.

When the possessed guy was dancing over the fire i was yelling DEAD BY DAWN! DEAD BY DAWN!

Wow, that never even registered w/ me! I'll be viewing that moment w/ a new perspective from now on. Awesome, Axnoll!!

Like what?  All I can remember is the 6 Saw movies and the four Final Destination movies, all 10 of which had miserable endings.  Well, Saw 6's ending is up in the air.

The Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies had marginally happy endings which were basically meaningless Pyrrhic victories because the villain always came back by the end.

It is kind of interesting that this is the second horror movie I've seen this year that showed the ending of the friggin movie on the movie poster and dvd case.  The other one was

Why did Raimi even offer the goat sacrifice and the possibility of regifting the cursed button just to have both things blow up in her face and have her lose anyway?  Why did he broadcast "HEY LOOK SHE TOOK THE WRONG ENVELOPE AND WON'T REALIZE THAT UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE" and give away his "shocking twist" 20 minutes ahead of time?

That's what pisses me off the most.  It's like he wanted to give a surprise ending, but by clubbing you over the head with the foreshadowing of the two envelopes, fails miserably.  Not to mention that the bad guys winning is a horror movie cliche.  A happy ending, that would have been unexpected.
