« on: January 18, 2007, 10:39:54 AM »
ok was watching mst3k "the undead" last night and i got to thinking, what happened to movies with hypnosis.  That seemed to be an entire genre according to mst3k.  they  have tons of episodes about so how come they havent made any modern movies about it.
just a thought.

There was that one with Kevin Bacon. He got hypnotized and saw dead people or something?

It was called Stir of Echoes.  Pretty good flick.

Then of course, there's Office Space.

Doesn't Gothika have hypnotism in it?

You're in luck, David X. Cohen has confirmed that the new dvd season of Futurama (yes they're bringing it back in case you didn't know) will contain a full episode of "Everybody Loves Hypno-Toad"

Good news for fans of Hypno Toad I guess?

COHEN: Hypnotoad. By the way, we are looking into producing a full 22-minute episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad for the DVD release. I am serious.

I am sure he is serious, I mean they would only have to make 3 frames and loop it, kind of like the Alien commentary on Galaxy Quest.

I think hypnosis is no longer prevalent in movies because we now know it can't actually do anything magical.  It can't make you do stuff that you are strongly opposed to, and it can't make you remember things from past lives.  It can, however, make you remember things that never really happened to you, which is something scary in itself.  But back then people were actually afraid that you could be hypnotized and turned into a werewolf or forced to kill people.  Ok, so no one thought they were going to turn into a werewolf, but the killing people was a concern for some.

The last movie I saw that had hypnosis in it was The Curse of the Jade Scorpion.  What a horrible movie.  Maybe that's why movies no longer feature hypnosis, cause Woody Allen killed it for the rest of us.

Yeah all the thriller-type movies tend to portray the misunderstood fears of the day, and nobody's afraid of hypnosis these days. (I blame Hanna-Barbera.) Back in the '80s it was computers/machines rebelling against man. In the '90s it was identity theft and meeting people from the internet, today it seems to be acts of terrorism.

John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns (2005) is a pretty damn good movie about the power of hypnotic film. I'll warn you however that it is very violent so probably not for the faint of heart.

Here's the IMDB on it
