Of course, that could also apply to Michael Bay and Transformers.

Actually, my understanding was that he was running SO far over budget the only way that Cameron could get the studio to fund the rest of the film was to give back his points on it...
...which means he made precisely nothing of the massive take of the film worldwide.
Unless what I read years ago was incomplete and he only gave back 'some' of his points... but I was pretty sure it was the whole slew of them. So he got nothing but 'respect' (and a boatload [or shipload] of Oscars to display for it, as well as virtually carte blanche to film any damn thing he feels like for the rest of his life because studios started throwing money at him hoping for a hit remotely as large.
