TF2 is biggest seling DVD of the year?
« on: October 28, 2009, 04:13:17 PM »
This is sad news.

I realize I didn't link to the original article, but this article had the epic comment: "Hell yea, I got my 5 copies thus far, including one signed by Bay and another signed by Megan Fox ".

I've seen albums proclaimed "biggest selling" - and didn't know too many people who had it.  And stores in my area had racks and racks full of copies...

Or they base that on units shipped to stores but not how many actually go out their doors.

Or companies do what some book publishers do...they buy up enough copies themselves to make it a best seller to "prime the pump".

At least, I hope that's what it is.   :(

If they are reporting Soundscan (for music) and Videoscan (for video) numbers then that is actually sold to customer info.

Then I weep for the future of the human race.

Sigh.

Folks, it sold $400 million worth of tickets in the US. It's $100 million ahead of its nearest competitor. Like it or not, it's the biggest film in the US so far this year. Are you really surprised that it sold a lot of DVDs?

That's what I'm thinking. It was bound to be, at minimum, a colossal seller on the home market. I wouldn't doubt it being the biggest of the year.

Such things happen when bad movies make so much money (I recall stories of stampedes at stores when the Twilight DVD was released). Just gotta grit your teeth, bare with it, and keep placing better movies in front of them whenever you go to the store.

See, it's one thing for a huge summer movie marketed up the wazoo to make a lot of money at the front end. But if people rush out and buy the DVD, that means they liked it. To steal a phrase "What a revoltin' development."

There's a lot of movies I've seen in the theater that I've liked that I didn't buy the DVD.  Even though I enjoyed them, they had no re-watch value for me at all.

Assuming that all of these people who bought the DVD are the ones who saw it in the theaters (I've known people who skip the theater and then just buy the DVD when it comes out no matter what) you're saying that every one of those people enjoyed it enough to want to watch it again?  And more than just once because otherwise they could Netfix?

As I say...that's disturbing.

I think this movie is only rewatchable if you're into drugs and alcohol and need something to watch while tripping out. That might explain the DVD sales. But there might be a percentage who bought the DVD because of the Riff Trax for it.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

We can only hope that is the reason.

Of course, people are idiots.

Which is the one thing about Rifftrax that makes me a little queasy...it makes business for people who (mostly) don't deserve it.

Riff Trax really is a double edged sword, isn't it?

It helps to think that the Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie, etc. franchise doesn't see a dime from us.

Can't remember which rock artist it was now...but he was asked once how he felt about an upcoming burn of that group's albums by some religious group.

"Just as long as they pay for them first."
