hey, Brak, you have already gotten a lot of great recommendations. The best movies of the past year, I think, were the Pixar films, Ponyo, and Kung Fu Panda (all animated), but that's just me. there are lots of great movies on this planet, but here are the ones I can think of that haven't been mentioned but that are great (though who knows if you'll actually like them):

The Manchurian Candidate (original)
THe Haunting (again, the original--1963 dir Robert Wise)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Gaslight
Sunset Blvd
Vertigo
Shadow of a Doubt
Strangers on a Train
Last Man On Earth (Vincent Price)
The Dark Crystal
(I'm in a Halloween mood, so these are all Halloween-ish so far. I'll try to think of others now)
Some Like It Hot
Best Years of Our Lives
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Sting
Howl's Moving Castle
The Odd Couple
It Happened One Night

these are foreign language films:
Babette's Feast
Il Postino
Shadow Magic
The Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Throne of Blood
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds
Spirited Away

these two are best around the 4th of July:
Yankee Doodle Dandy
1776

and there are tons more I could say, but depending on what you have or haven't seen, that should keep you busy for a while

(p.s. it sounds like we're the same religion, Brak)

Pretty much every title I'd immediately recommend has been recommended, with the exception of Let The Right One In. Though when you see it, make sure you're watching the Theatrical Subtitles.

Black Sheep. It's somewhat like Brain Dead (Dead Alive) coupled with the picturesque beauty of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Magnificent.

You might want to mention its the black sheep movie WITHOUT chris farley. Good cheesy gore flick! Come to think of it that would be a great one to see riffed!

yeah i kind of figured it wasn't the Chris Farley movie. I wouldn't have thought of his movie being one of the greatest movies ever made.

Yeah, if you want to watch a Chris Farley David Spade buddy picture, stick to Tommy Boy.  Almost the same movie, but about break pads instead of an election.

[re: Black Sheep]

Yeah, it's not. It's not a bad horror film, but I wouldn't place it within the best 100 horror films ever made let alone a "best general movies" list.

The ending made this one a must watch for me. Who couldn't resist mutated farting sheep. Friggin' awesome.

The "mint sauce = holy water to were-sheep" revelation makes the film worth watching.
