Idiocracy (Mike Judge's new movie)
« on: January 11, 2007, 10:18:25 PM »
I had never heard of Idiocracy until a few days ago when it was released on DVD.  I just rented and watched Idiocracy and I have mixed feelings about it.  For anyone who hasn't heard of it, the movie is about Luke Wilson being put in suspended animation for an accidental 500 years.  He wakes up and the entire world has basically bred itself into stupidity.

First off, I thought the movie was very, very funny.  It really had some great moments, be warned though the social commentary was in no way subtle.  My mixed feelings about the film came from it seeming that Mike Judge was really taking a stand against the painful stupidity that so much of our culture currently propogates, with advertising, TV shows, etc.  I felt that his satire was right on and hilarious, but in some ways I feel that Mike Judge himself was part of the genesis of the stupidity of this generation.  Beavis and Butt-head was the first show of its kind and my generation really latched on to it.  So maybe he is even poking fun at himself and the type of humor that he used to make his living off of, but it did seem a bit hypocritical.  Of course maybe the hypocracy is part of the point, I'm not sure.

Either way, I enjoyed the movie.  Anyone else gotten chance to see this yet?  I'm really interested to hear what other people thought of this movie.

I saw it a couple of days ago, too!

I actually agree with everything you've said.  The film does "smart/dumb" very well, with some very nice scenes at the start explaining how the stupid people come to outnumber the smart ones (I think maybe the whole family tree sequence is the best in the movie).  There were a few unexplained moments (like if they're so dumb, how can they construct the massive, massive destruction robots), but I enjoyed it.  It's just a shame that after Office Space, Judge's next movie is buried again.

I also had not even heard of this movie until a few days ago, when the DVD was released. Sad to know that a major studio won't even advertise a film from a respected cult icon. Mike Judge deserves better.

I am really intrigued by this movie. I have only seen clips, and read reviews, but the buzz is hard to pass up. I'll most likely rent it and possibly buy it.

I agree - the movie was excellent. VERY funny in very many places, and thoroughly entertaining.

However I have to disagree that Mike Judge is necessarily part of the genesis. Well I guess that's the wrong wording - yes B&B was a definite milestone in stupid humor, but I don't think it's really the biggest argument.

My favorite part of the movie involves Carl's Jr and their "EXTRA!  BIG-ASS! FRIES!" and how they were going to take that woman's children into custody because she was an unfit parent. To me, the satire isn't JUST how current entertainment aims for the lowbrow and the least common denominator. I think there's a much wider picture Judge has painted with the film, and while not subtle in the least, was both entertaining and scary at the same time.

B&B wasn't stupid humor. It was smart humor about stupid characters. The difference is huge.

And Idiocracy was okay. I mainly liked when the dumb-speak was ramped up and trying to sound official and smart. Like when Wilson escapes from prison and the loudspeaker shouts "Excape! Excape!"

It is? Wasn't aware of that. To me it was both, but in the end, it was a lot of dumb humor, just extremely well done.

Before you label me as a hater, I wanted to say I'm a huge fan of Beavis and Butt-head, so my calling it "stupid humor" is not unfounded. I have seen damn near every episode, and I love each one (mostly). I still don't think I, personally would call it smart humor, but that's just my opinion.

They still kick ass either way. Now I'm gonna go dig for some oil out in my yard.

Maybe saying that he is the genesis of this generation's stupid humor is overstating it.  Although I can't think of anything in popular culture that had the same vibe as B & B at the time.  What I mean by that is people calling each other butthole, etc. and being just plain vulgar and stupid, just for the sake of doing so is something I hadn't seen before, at least not on TV.  Without it shows cartoons like South Park likely never would have gotten the chance to be on basic cable.  So maybe he isn't part of the genesis of stupid culture, but I think if it was a milestone it was a huge on in the type of humor he is poking fun at in Idiocracy.

I loved this movie and was one of the few who actually saw it in a theater.  Glad to finally have it on DVD, even if the release is lacking in extras.

I think that all of Judge's work can be appreciated on two levels.  The stupid/slapstick and the biting/satirical.  Idiocracy works on both levels very well and my first viewing led me to see it as one of the best satires of dumb American culture ever.  Borat was right behind.

The second viewing led to a better appreciation of the background elements of all of the advertising, etc., though I was a little troubled by the casting of most of the extras.  The extras were all portrayed to be utter morons, but of uncertain ethnicity, though definitely not "pure white."  Most of the people in positions of power in the movie, save for the president, were white.

Now I'm not trying to pull the race card, but it was something I noticed.  Stupid can transcend ethnicity for certain, but it just seemed that all the extras were very haggard and fat and perhaps of slightly darker skin tone.  I don't know what to make of that yet.

Well, I can imagine that with all the supposed humping going on and no-one really bothered about ethnicity anymore, mixed race was going to permeate the future.   ;D

cool good to hear its decent, ill have to check it out.

How much political commentary is there?  I hope none, blasting the current culture is too important to waste any time on political rambling in my view.

I really liked it.
The family tree sequence was the best part for me. That and "Go away, baitin'! "

I've been looking forward to this since I read the premise in a magazine preview. Then the movie just never came out. Because "From the creator of Office Space" wouldn't have brought people to the theaters in droves?

Someone suggested this was part of a good-natured rivalry between Mike Judge and fellow Fox cartoon creator Matt Groening, what with the similarity with the basic premise of Futurama. Conspiracy nuts...
