Best (commercially successful) album of all time?

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

If you give it a score (I'd give 4,5 out of 5) and then multiply by total sales, I think few if any albums could beat it. So, yes.

I'm gonna pick what I think are the best albums by some of my favorite artists:

The Beatles:  A Hard Day's Night
The Who: The Who Sell Out
The Beach Boys: Sunflower
The Band: Stage Fright
Frank Sinatra:  In The Wee Small Hours
Bob Dylan:  Bringing It All Back Home
Fairport Convention:  What We Did On Our Holidays
Led Zeppelin:  Led Zeppelin II

I like other bands, but those are the batch I've been listening to lately.

Haha, if only there were Rifftrax for bad CD's! :D

This one would be good for starters:

but when it comes to good, better, bad or worse it's all just an opinion predicated on what it is that you value in music.

dont you think that with all the thousands of years of music history it is highly unlikely that the "greatest" album of all time happens to be from your era.

What about mozart?

I was half-responding to this, and other comments made about classic music. That's all.

David Bowie's Low is perhaps the greatest achievement any musician can ever hope to achieve......

a few caveats:

1. bowie is my favorite artist of all time. (good to meet a fellow fan!)
2. sound + vision is my favorite song of all time, hands down. it's the perfect pop song.
3. you nailed it by mentioning hunky dory.  brilliant.

that being said, i wouldn't put this in the best album of all time slot, because it's too "side a/side b"  think of the vinyl record: there's a bowie side & an eno side.  the bowie side is probably the best a-side of a record ever recorded, but the eno side is...well, enoesque.  excellent, but not bowie...

nothing wrong with someone picking ....Ziggy Stardust as their favorite, because that's the perfect glamrock/rock record.  It's probably my pick for desert island album by Bowie.

can't pick a 'best ever',but here's a few throughout the decades that are up there, imo:

billiant...PERFECT!

(^ my fave album of the decade so far)

Don't judge.

great albums.

Well, I've always believed and still do that the 80's was the best decade ever for
music. In particular, the early 80's  ;D

hehehe, I worked at Peaches in 1979 and stayed in the retail record biz (at a couple different places locally) through 1987... then I got a real job, met my wife, got a mortgage and life has never been the same LOL
