I'm wondering if "classic" animation is going to win out over the new stuff.  We've seen a lot of recent characters, and not so much of the Looney Tunes or Disney characters.

I'm hopin that's because the classic characters are in the top 20. I'd say most of my characters were "classic" but I'd have to review my list again.

I think they need to start doing Looney Tunes before features again.  I mean, look at the Pixar stuff.  They need to do some serious revisiting and start doing new ones.  I mean, Presto was pretty much a Bugs Bunny cartoon sans smart-ass dialogue.  And while I wouldn't be opposed to new characters, the old ones still have limitless potential.

They were actually planning on doing this back when "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" was in production. Unfortunately that film's performance at the box office gave Warner the idea that today's audiences weren't very interested in a traditional take on the characters anymore, so the new cartoons were canceled in favor of stuff like "Baby Looney Tunes" and "Loonatics".  Undecided

I liked Looney Tunes: Back in Action....well the cartoon parts, maybe if they had gotten someone better than Jenna Elfman (she's the daughter of Danny Elfman, Danny Elfman....)

20. Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop) - 59 points
(4  of 18  lists. Highest ranking - #5 Relaxing Dragon)

Spike is a fictional bounty hunter who was born on Mars. He is 27 years old and is tall and thin in appearance. He has fluffy dark green hair and reddish-brown eyes, one of which is artificial and lighter than the other. A flashback in Session 6 revealed that his fully functioning right eye was surgically replaced by a cybernetic one (although Spike himself claims to have lost his natural eye in an "accident"). He is usually dressed in a blue leisure suit, with a yellow shirt and boots. Spike often has a cigarette between his lips, sometimes despite rain or "No Smoking" signs. His blood type is O, his height is 6'1" (185 cm), and his weight is 154 lbs (70 kg).

Spike makes use of sleight of hand techniques to win card games, pick pockets, and slip things onto other people unnoticed. He is also shown to sneak up on enemies through disguise or quiet movement. He is proficient with weaponry (such as his personal Jericho 941 as well as other guns and explosives) and hand-to-hand combat skills. He is a skilled martial artist and a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do. Spike is also a pilot and flies a converted Asteroid racer called Swordfish II, which is armed with four machine guns, multiple missile launchers, and a plasma cannon.
When he is not shown working or practicing martial arts, Spike is very laid back, sarcastic, and lackadaisical, to the consternation of his crew mates. Spike's philosophy seems to be based on the ancient samurai ideals of immediacy, such as considering oneself as dead and the idea of death being an awakening from a dream, which are both elements of bushid? illustrated in the Hagakure.

Series director Shinichir? Watanabe has said that Spike has a habit of being very indirect with his emotions; for example, he may behave antagonistically towards someone he actually likes. He says that this could apply to Spike's relationship with Faye.

19. Buzz Lightyear - 61 points
(4  of 18  lists. Highest ranking - #3 Lassieface)

“To 19th place and beyond!”

Buzz Lightyear is first seen as a birthday gift for Andy. At this time, Buzz does not realize that he is a toy, believing himself to be the real Buzz Lightyear. He also thinks that all of his equipment is fully functional, not realizing that his communicator is a sticker, his laser is an LED, etc. This belief causes friction between Buzz and Woody, who he refers to as a 'sad, strange, little man', Andy's previous favorite toy. The other toys in Andy's room are attracted by Buzz's doo-dads and gung-ho attitude, but Woody becomes increasingly jealous and contrives to cause Buzz to fall behind Andy's desk. Instead, Buzz falls out of the window and is thought to be lost. During this period, Buzz manages to survive and save Woody numerous times due to the fact that he still believes that he is a space ranger. Using both stealth and agility, he manages to get through all challenges with Woody until he learns the truth. Eventually Buzz and Woody meet up and through a series of incidents, Buzz comes first to realize that he is, in fact, a toy (he learns this when he attempts to fly out the window of toy-destroying child Sid's house, only to fall and break his left arm in the process). At first, he falls into depression after learning the truth, but with encouragement from Woody, he gradually comes to accept the situation (being loved by Andy). He teams up with Woody to escape Sid, and together, they are able to reunite with Andy and the other toys.

In Toy Story 2, Buzz leads Slinky, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and Hamm on the mission to find and rescue Woody after he's stolen by Al McWhiggin, the owner of Al's Toy Barn, for his collection. Assuming the leadership role, Buzz manages to track down Woody's trail and find the culprit. He appears to be a serious leader right on his task, as he demands the toys not to give up until Woody is safely back in Andy's room. Buzz and the toys eventually succeed by navigating traffic, elevators, cars, airports, and aircraft. At one point in the movie, while investigating Al's Toy Barn itself, Buzz is captured by a newer Buzz Lightyear action figure, who overpowers him and imprisons him in a display box, showing that the entire toy line apparently holds the same ignorance of their existence as toys as Buzz once had (a discarded script for Toy Story 3 had Buzz and his toy line recalled back to Taiwan due to a defect, which could have explained why he and the rest of the line's figures believed themselves to be their characters while Woody, who also possessed his own series, was never aware of his origins until the events of Toy Story 2). Nevertheless, Buzz manages to break free from the box and follows the rest of the toys and Al all the way to his apartment, where he uses Woody's exact words from the first film to persuade Woody to come back home with him. After rescuing Woody and getting rid of the vile Prospector at the airport, Buzz assists Woody in rescuing Jessie. Despite being separated from Woody, Buzz commandeers Bullseye to follow Woody and is seen galloping next to the plane's wheels when he catches Woody's hat. After the toys finally return home, Buzz and Jessie enter a relationship together (the same way as Woody and Bo Peep). The last shot shows Woody, Buzz, and their respective girlfriends watching Wheezy sing "You've Got a Friend in Me". In the Super Bowl on February 3, 2008 during the 3rd quarter, Buzz and Woody are watching the Super Bowl and then watch a promo for WALL-E, who is playing with a vacuum.

Buzz was featured in the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as a giant helium balloon.

18. Ren and Stimpy- 61 points
( 4 of 18  lists. Highest ranking - #1 Monty)

Marlin T. "Ren" Höek

Marlin T. "Ren" Höek is a scrawny "Asthma-Hound" Chihuahua with a fairly long, rat-like, pink tail. Martin "Dr. Toon" Goodman of Animation World Magazine described Ren as "scrawny," "dyspeptic," and "violently psychotic." On some occasions Ren "lost his mind" in a "cumulative process," resulting in Ren becoming, in Goodman's words, a "screaming klaxon, neon-pink eyes dilating into twin novae inches above his jagged, monolithic teeth." Andy Meisler of The New York Times described Ren as "adventurous," "intelligent," and "emotionally brittle."

Kricfalusi originally voiced Ren in a manner that he describes as "a bad imitation of Peter Lorre." Billy West said that he auditioned to play Ren; the creators of the series believed that having West voice Ren and Stimpy would give him too large of a workload. West voiced Ren after Nickelodeon fired Kricfalusi; Kricfalusi would return for the Spike TV episodes and unaired episodes of The Ren and Stimpy Show. In the pilot, Pierre Decelles provided Ren's signature diabolical laughter, while West performed Ren's maniacal laugh in the series.
Kricfalusi complained about Nickelodeon executives requesting for Ren to have "a softer side."

Bill Wray said that Ren was his favorite character to write for; Wray described Ren as "fun" because "you can make him mean." In 1993 he added that
"It drives me crazy when I tell people I work on the show and they always say, "Make Ren meaner."

Stimpson J. "Stimpy" Cat

Stimpson J. "Stimpy" Cat is a fat, red and white cat with a blue nose, purple eyelids, no tail, human-style buttocks, flat feet, and a brain the size of a peanut (despite some intelligence, such as cooking and inventing; he is also a talented musician). Martin "Dr. Toon" Goodman of Animation World Magazine described Stimpy as "obese," and "brain-damaged." Andy Meisler of The New York Times described Stimpy as "bosom," "barrel-chested," and "good-natured."

Stimpy's trademark facial expression is a blissfully ignorant smile with his tongue flopping out. Most of the time when he gets excited, he says his famous catchphrase, "Oh, Joy!" or simply "Jooooooy". He also has a strong attachment to his "first material possession" which is a litter box (given to him in the pilot episode) and even though Ren destroys it (by bashing it on his head in "Fire Dogs" or dumping it in acid in "Ren's Bitter Half") Stimpy always reacts strongly to it by crying, panicking or fainting, though it always appears again in some later episode. Stimpy is named after an art school classmate of Kricfalusi, whose nickname was "Stimpy Cadogen" ("Killer Cadoogen" was Stimpy's pseudonym in several episodes, and in a few others he is referred to as Stimpleton Cadogen). West said that he based Stimpy's voice on a "sped up" Larry Fine of the Three Stooges. West described Stimpy as one of his favorite characters. Eric Bauza voiced Stimpy in the Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon".

Stimpy likes to create destructive electronic devices and feels a fixation for "sensory pleasures of fresh kitty litter."

Wray described Stimpy as his favorite character to draw. Wray said that Stimpy does not have "a huge range of emotion."
West said in an interview that he did not wish to voice Stimpy in the Adult Party Cartoon because he believed that the series had no humor and that voicing Stimpy in it would damage his career.

17. Phillip J. Fry - 63 points
(5  of 18  lists. Highest ranking - #6 Imrahil)

Born in 1974, Fry is an average, thoroughly unremarkable, 25-year-old pizza delivery boy who, during the last few seconds of year 1999, accidentally falls into a cryogenic freezing tank while delivering pizza on a prank call. He subsequently remains frozen for 1,000 years, finally thawing out on the last day of the year 2999, where he meets the one-eyed career officer Turanga Leela, and a cigar smoking, booze fueled, kleptomaniac robot Bender. Together, they are employed by Fry's great(x30) nephew, the senile and demented old scientist Prof. Hubert J. Farnsworth, as the spaceship crew of his delivery company. In his old life Fry had a girlfriend Michelle who dumped him, and an older brother Yancy, in the first episode, "Space Pilot 3000", just before he was frozen.

Characterized as simple, sweet, naive and immature, Fry regards Bender as his closest friend, despite the latter's often violent criminal tendencies. He also has strong feelings for Leela, although he lacks the intelligence required for articulating his emotions; thus, his love remains (sometimes coldly) unreciprocated, though not entirely without hope. She does occasionally return his interest throughout the series, and in the movie 'Into the Wild Green Yonder', she admits to loving him back. At the end of that film, they are seen sharing a kiss as they enter a wormhole.

In the episode "The Why of Fry", Leela's seemingly oblivious pet Nibbler reveals himself as the reason for Fry's cryogenic freezing; because of Fry's uniquely inferior mental characteristics (he lacks the Delta brainwave, the cause of his stupidity and the result of being his own grandfather) he can withstand the intellect-draining onslaught of the evil Brainspawn. Nibbler's people, the Nibblonians, deem him "The Mighty One". Through prediction (on the eve of 1999, as the Nibblonians lack the ability to travel through time), they guessed that Fry would be the one to save the world from the evil Brainspawn; since his natural lifespan would not extend to the right millennium, however, Nibbler is sent to make the aforementioned hoax delivery call and push an unsuspecting Fry into the cryogenic tube, to re-emerge December 31, 2999. His lack of the Delta brainwave later proved to prevent his mind from being read telepathically (which in itself can be considered a joke saying he doesn't think at all).

16. Pinky & The Brain - 66 points
(5  of 18  lists. Highest ranking - #1 Insert Coin(s))

“Gee Brain What do you want to do tonight?” “Same thing we do every night Pinky, try to take over the List of Crap…”

The Brain

The Brain (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) looks and sounds like Orson Welles, although his physical appearance is based on storyboard artist, Tom Minton. He is highly intelligent and develops plans for global domination and he will use all sorts of methods from politics to inventions to achieve his mission. Brain's name is revealed in "Project B.R.A.I.N." to result from the acronym for "Biological Recombinant Algorithmic Intelligence Nexus". His tail is bent like a staircase—he often uses it to pick the lock of the cage—and his head is large and wide, supposedly housing his abnormally large brain. He appears to be coldly unemotional and speaks in a deadpan manner. Nevertheless, Brain has a very subtle sense of humor, still possesses some Christmas spirit, and has even fallen in love once, with Billie. (Also, with Trudie in the episode "The Third Mouse"). Various episodes have compared Brain to Don Quixote, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Intellectually, Brain sees his inevitable rise to power as beneficial to the world rather than mere megalomania. An example of this being what he truly believes can be seen in Wakko's Wish where he stated to Pinky "We're on our way to fame, fortune and a world that's a better place for all," showing while he does envision himself becoming world leader, he wants to make everything greater for everyone. In one episode, when Brain finds himself under the influence of hypnosis by a psychologist he had planned to manipulate for one of his schemes (none other than Sigmund Freud), it is revealed that Brain lived in a can with his parents when he was young. The researchers took him from his home, and the last he saw of it was a picture of the world on the side of the can. Dr. Sigmund Freud speculates that Brain's hunger to take over the world stems from wanting to go back home to his can and to his parents.

Pinky

Pinky (voiced by Rob Paulsen) is another genetically modified mouse who shares the same cage at Acme Labs, but is substantially less bright. He speaks with an exaggerated cockney accent. He frequently uses nonsensical interjections, such as "narf", "zort", "poid", and "troz" (the last of which Pinky started saying after noticing it was "zort in the mirror"). Although Pinky is also an albino lab mouse like the Brain, he has a straighter tail, blue eyes, a severe overbite, and is taller than the Brain. Pinky's name is given to him by Brain, thinking that Brain was calling him when, in fact, Brain was referring to his pinky digit.

Pinky is more open-minded than the Brain and much more up-beat. He doesn't let troubles ruin his day, mostly because he's too scatter-brained to notice them. Pinky also works with Brain not withstanding the fact that Brain insults him constantly and often beats him over the head. However, Pinky actually seems to enjoy this, laughing after every hit. Pinky is just happy spending time with his best friend. Pinky is also more attuned to the world at large, due to a large amount of time watching television or following other popular culture fads; as such, he tends to think in less rigorous patterns than the Brain, and has offered solutions that Brain would have not come up with. Pinky has a number of unusual special abilities, something like 'magic', but caused by his genetic engineering. Most notably, he occasionally levitates, and also is apparently capable of telekinesis, as seen when he levitated several pieces of fruit in a bowl.

Another one of mine!

Also that is one of my favorite Futurama moments ever.
