Stuck on a Reference
« on: June 24, 2009, 04:00:58 PM »
I'm cataloging some of the more obscure references in the riffs for this film, and I am absolutely stuck on this one.  Near the beginning of the film, Mike makes reference to "Wendell Willkie's death car", and I have no idea what he's talking about.  Wendell Willkie was a presidential candidate in the 1940 election, he wrote One World, he was a lawyer, he was a political activist ... and he died of heart disease in 1944.

So what's with the reference to a "death car"?

The _____ death car joke has been used different ways. But often it is a reference to someone who would NOT have a death car (either a car used in killing sprees or a car someone died in an accident). See the 'Design for Dreaming' short for several examples of this.

The origin of that riff comes from the fact that the car that got shot up along with Bonnie and Clyde was put on display around the county.....advertised as "Bonnie and Clyde's Death Car!"
