Missed opportunities.
« on: May 27, 2009, 07:43:10 AM »
It seemed like this one had a lot more missed opportunities than others. There was no riff on the "Mickey Mouse lake" they fly over in the Solar Sailer, suggestion:

*Mickey Mouse voice* "Hey, kids. I'm subliminal. Buy my crap."

There was nothing about the girly scream Clu gives when he is captured.
"How do you program a girly scream, anyway?"

Also, Clu does not run at all when he is going to be captured by the slow moving Recognizers.
"Dogged, deturmined, but apparently no fight or flight reflex whatsoever."

Um, no.

If they are on vacation (regular riffers) let me know when they get back.

No offense but not what I signed up for.

See you in a few months!

According to JoCo, the regular riffers still did almost all of the writing.

Really? Didn't seem like their writing.

What did you sign?!

I dearly hope you didn't sign anything Mike gave you.  If so you're paying $300 a month for FAKE boat insurance.

It's almost as if people were ready to not like it regardless...

I can't help but notice that anytime somebody dislikes a Rifftrax, it's their fault.

Not at all, it's just that these people, when they went for the writing, (like you did) seemed to be less vocal once it was pointed out who actually wrote the riffs.

I think people seem to be overly ready to hate a Rifftrax Presents (unless it's a Bill + Kevin one)

Ah, well I wouldn't say they wanted to dislike it, but rather expected more from Mike and Co. That's how I felt based on the sample. I was surprised they wrote it, but still didn't think it was great. Who knows, though. It's a tough distinction to make. I like to think people around here are mature enough to judge riffs without bias about who it was who wrote them.

Sorry, you're right, there should have been one of these:  :P

I am bad at using smilies to indicate sarcasm/jokes and it has certainly gotten me into an argument more than once.

To get back to the subject, the biggest missed opportunities are the same (biggest) ones missed in the Riff Raff Theater version.

Both Bruce Boxleitner and Peter Jurasik played major characters in the Babylon 5 series.  Peter played a minor character in Tron, so there wasn't all that much opportunity to fit in riffs on Babylon 5 for that.  But Bruce played the character Tron, and also played Capt. John Sheridan in Babylon 5.  And in both, is character is apparently killed off only to come back to life.  What seems a perfect riff to me would be to have some riffer pretend to say to Tron the exact lines said to Sheridan ("We thought you were dead"), and then have someone else pretend to be Bruce saying "I was, but I'm feeling better now".

To me, that's one kind of great riff.  It's the kind which will be totally missed by someone who didn't already know Babylon 5, but fans of B5 would get it instantly.  In was a riff like that which originally got me hooked on MST3k, many years ago.  By "like that", I mean a riff that you couldn't possibly get unless you were already thinking of the movie that the riff-line referred to.  I did get my hopes up a bit when the rifftrax-presents riff had one line about Babylon 5 fans (iirc), but IMO the main opportunity was missed.

Getting back to Peter, there could have been some simple "So Sheridan, we meet again", or "This time I'm not going to play with shadows!" line, especially if said with the exaggerated accent that Peter used when playing Londo Mollari.  Or even a simple "VIR!!!" in Londo's accent.

(disclaimer: I've still only watched this rifftrax two times, and now that I've written these comments I'll probably find out that they did have riffs on Londo/Sheridan, and I was merely too slow to catch the references...)
