Initial idea-
Quote
So, Stansimpson's thread asking for help gave me a new idea for writing a script.  I was thinking about taking a movie (TBD) and splitting it up into 1 or 2 minute sections and posting one clip a day and letting the forum write jokes in 1 minute segments, sorta like the photo riff thread in the board games section.  After we get to the end, I'll take the jokes that work the best and record the riff with some of my crew.  Maybe we could do one of the more commonly requested movies that hasn't been officially riffed yet, like Street Fighter or something.  Thoughts?

I'm posting all the clips in this first post.  So please remember when replying that you need to mention which clip you're writing for.

Alright gang here's your first clip.  Just make sure in your reply you put which clip you're referring to and the time you want your joke to start.  If you want to give a cue for what you're talking about be it visual or a line of dialog feel free.  The more detail the better.  If you're referencing a movie and you wanna let me know which one that's cool too.  I've seen a bunch of movies but my memory of them isn't so hot all the time (even well known ones).  Same goes for impressions you want done.  I'm not the best voice actor in the world but I'll give it a shot.

Sorry the screen's stretched out funny.  The first couple of clips I did on the weaker of my two computers.  Hopefully I can use my better one starting on Sunday with my better computer.

I'm not gonna go heavy into writing until we get to the end of the month and gaps need to be filled in before recording.  This project is supposed to belong to everyone so when I come up with something I'll post it here as well.  And to anyone who feels like contributing, feel free to skip back to any previous clips as well.  Just because I'm posting a new one daily, doesn't mean that the previous days clip is closed.  I won't be finalizing anything until the beginning of June although I may start putting the script together a little earlier.

If you're willing to do the tech, I'm willing to write the jokes.  ;D

This idea sounds........................LIKE THE THE BEST THING EVER!!!!

But who gets to decide what gets put into that section of the movie?  I'd imagine you will if you're the one recording which is fair enough.  The downside is this sounds like its going to take forever.  Even if you did one a day at 2 minutes of length, it will take 45 days for an hour and a half movie.  Maybe you can make it 5 minute clips then it will only take 18 days.  But 5 minutes can be quite a bit and cover a lot of material and merge different scenes.  Maybe you can do it by chapters in a DVD then so we don't get half of one scene and half of another?

Or maybe this idea is only gonna work for shorts.

Sounds like fun, The clips Stan put up are a bit "challenging", especially the third (hence his need for input) but I think it would be fun to do :)

I realize that it would take a while, which is fine.   I think if I made the segments too big, you'd likely only get jokes for the easy parts.  And it's not like the clips would really go anywhere, then anybody who doesn't have time to do a lot could catch up later on.  When we pick a movie, I'll get all the clips ready to go ahead of time, so all I have to do is upload them.  I mean for this to be a long haul project so we can get random passers by as well as those who really take an interest and contribute daily.  I don't want this to seem like a big project for everyone that doesn't want it to be but those who do can spend more time on it than others.

I guess that I'd have final say on what goes in, but I'd run the thread like the photo riff one, where everyone could comment on jokes they really like.  Hopefully, the best jokes in certain segments would be pretty obvious to everyone.  My main goal when we're finished is to edit it together so it sounds like a cohesive script (including adding any running gags and rewording things so it sounds like one voice).

Oh yeah, since it'll be hard for me to give this out to everyone who contibutes for free (given that we're limited to 10), I'll put the price at the minimum for the first couple of weeks.

Or you could just host it on a website and PM the secret link to those people you feel deserve a copy.  Personally I don't lack for money and I want to support as many good IRiffers as I can, so I'd buy a copy, but most IRiffers aren't in that position.

Thoughts?

I think things would move along more quickly if you went with 8 to 10 minute segments from the film. Other than that, I think it sounds like a good idea.

Quickly yes, but I don't think the riffing would be nearly as thorough.  If you did segments that big, I have no doubt in my mind that I'd have to gap fill really big segments.  Usually, when I'm writing, if I try to fill in entire sections without leaving any gaps, I average about 7-8 minutes an hour of stuff I consider worth keeping.  Anybody can find something funny to say with 10 minutes to work with, but it's a lot harder when you have to find something funny to say every 15 seconds(as I'm sure any iRiffer will tell you).  And once I/we pick a movie it's not like you can't work ahead at your own pace if you have alternate means for aquiring a dvd.

Anybody have any movie suggestions?  I'd prefer to work on something that we all feel is deserving instead of throwing a crazy title out there that nobody's thought of before.  Try to keep the suggestions to 2 hours in length max.  This is going to be a lengthy process as it is.

I've always thought The Last Starfighter deserves a deep, hard riffing.

I've never seen it, and therefore don't own it.   But someone has riffed it.  No sample though, and from the feedback it looks like an improv group-

Oh well, I'm down for whatever.  The Others is too long or I'd suggest that.

How about combining the theme of this thread with the theme of another and doing the pilot episode of something, they tend to be around two hours long.

I understand what you are saying but keep in mind that MST3K has about five riffs per minute which means that out of each one minute clip you are going to get about five jokes.  That's a lot of people contributing jokes who will not see them in there and a lot of time for you (and contributors) to spend on such little return.  I don't think a five minute duration will result in only a few jokes that everyone makes at the obvious moments leaving silence at the more difficult parts.  Heck, look at the Lost City chapters.  They were more or less the same crap happening in each episode (with the intro exactly the same) yet people managed to come up with new riff after riff even in pretty dull parts.
