I think what we're all saying is:

For the love of God, don't buy a Wii!

 :P

Speak for yourself.

My Wii is my most played gaming system.

My Wii gets a lot of play, too . . . Just not from me mostly. We got the Wii first because it was easier to talk my wife into getting that because of the family-friendly aspect. As for my Xbox 360 (which I only got because of a surprise Christmas bonus), I don't let the kids anywhere near it . . . not until we get another controller, anyway. Those things aren't cheap.

Oh yeah. Wii trumps the other two, but we're talking PS3 Vs. Xbox. :^)

Seconded. My Wii, after a brief initial bout of playing WiiSports and Smash Bros, has basically collected dust for a year. I've had much more playtime with every other system that I own.

The OP didn't ask about a Wii. If I had money for only one system, it would be a Wii.

I should mention that the 160gb models that come with Uncharted do NOT have backwards compatibility. I don't think it's even possible to get a BC one anymore.

Yeah, my understanding was that the 80GB and 160GB models that are currently in production have neither hardware nor software compatiblity.  So unless you want to fish around on eBay for a discontinued model, you'd need to hold on to your PS2 to play your old library.

And given how easy and cheap it is to replace the hard drive yourself, I just don't see the point of buying the higher-capacity models.

I went with the 360... but that's just because fellow forum member and all-around kickass guy, James of Linhoo, gave me a great deal on his old one. I wouldn't have bought either the 360 or a PS3 brand new, I just don't game enough anymore to justify the cost.

For whatever reason, a good half dozen of my friends / co-workers are Sony nuts... Camcorders, TVs, DVD players... you name it, they have a Sony... So I've seen and played a lot of PS3. Personally, I think it has the edge in raw eye candy power... In two games that I've played a decent amount on both systems (GTA4 and NBA2K8), the PS3 versions strike me as prettier to look... and video playback for both DVD and Blu-ray is phenomenal... But unless you've got a 1080p set to put the Blu-ray to good use, I think the 360 makes more sense considering the start-up cost.

EDIT: Two out of the five people that I know who own PS3s have had to send them in for repair work, obviously not a big enough sample to be statistically relevant, but just thought I'd throw that out there... I don't think either system is especially robust.

My current preference goes Wii then PS3 then 360. Wii is more geared toward my style lately.. All the first party stuff like Mario Kart is consistently good plus its hard not to love the great arcade stuff like Sega's light gun games or various other unique play games (star wars is in the mail looking forward to light saber battles)

That answer fluctuates though. Love the 360 for Halo 3 and Burnout. And I enjoy watching movies on both the PS3 and 360. When it comes to having a 360 vs PS3 type question... my choice is generally PS3 on account of the better controller design. Which isnt to say the 360 controller is bad, its just not my preference. For example, I find GTA 4 largly unplayable for 360, but perfectly accurate for PS3.

I'd say never really worry about whether or not it is "likely" to break down. My PS2 is 6 years old, and haven't had any problems even considering how terribly it has been treated at times. Meanwhile a friend of mine is on his 3rd. Every system has it's potential problems. Except for the NES. I don't think you can even purposefully break those

The cartridge mechanism on the original NES was atrocious.

What's really odd, I've never had a complete console breakage (computers, on the other hand...you should see my Amiga graveyard).  I still have an NES (which, I will admit, does have the purple flashy, but still works), an SNES I still have hooked up and use, a Playstation, a PS2, and a PS3, none of which have ever given me any real trouble at all.

What's even crazier, the PS systems are the only Sony products I purchased which DO work.  I have a Minidisc recorder which fell apart, an amplifier which has Analog/Digital signal issues, TWO similar brand VCRS that ate videotapes, and a camcorder which currently isn't broken, but I'm keeping an eye on.  I mean, come on.  How does everything break except the things which are SUPPOSED to break?

The cartridge mechanism on the original NES was atrocious.

You keep saying that, but as always, experience varies by person. I've had mine for more than 20 years, and it's never had a single problem. All the games I own (more than 60) continue to work just as perfectly as the day I got them. My SNES has had more problems than the NES did (I've had it for about 15 years or so, and the system still works fine, but a few of the cartridges have crapped out over the years... RIP Final Fantasy 2 :().
