I personally wanted the PS3 more than the 360.  I already had a PS2, though, with quite a few games, and the backwards compatibility with upscaled, smoothed graphics was a big thing for me.

Unfortunately, the backwards compatibility is long gone.  Otherwise, I'd probably consider picking up a PS3, too.

Put another tickmark in the Xbox camp.  For me, the fact that the Platinum Hits line is already well-established -- meaning you can pick up thirty or so of the best games yet released for 20-30 bucks a pop, not to mention used games -- is the major factor.  I can't in good conscience lay out $60 for a new game, so the fact that I can go through the back catalog at 1/2 or 1/3 price, and there are enough games in that catalog that I should never need to buy a new game, is a big win.

By the way, I'd definitely go with the Pro model.  With the 60 GB hard drive on the Pro, there's not longer any reason to buy the Elite.  The cost of the Pro over the Arcade is about the same as you would pay if you bought the extra components a la carte, and those components are an essential upgrade.  With the elite, though, you're mostly getting more hard drive space than most people will ever use, and you're paying an overinflated price for an HDMI cable, which you can get for a couple of bucks through Eforcity on Amazon.

Just want to point out that the backwards compatibility on the PS3 is not gone. The only model that didn't have it was the 40GB one, which was put out specifically to be a lower-priced offering. The discontinued 60GB one had it (hardware), the still-available 80GB one has it (software), and the new 160GB one has it as well (software). I've got the 80GB model, and I've never noticed any problems with any of the PS2 games I own. Not having to scrounge up an old PS2 memory card if I want to play any of those games is a nice bonus (it emulates the memory card on the system's hard drive - which means you can also download savegames online, if that's your thing).

I love the PS3, and it's only going to get better as the hardware continues to be used to better effect in the future. There are some nice exclusive games coming out this year that should be good, too. Also, you don't have to pay a subscription fee to get online content. Not having to have an extra device sitting on my TV stand to play Blu-Rays is an added bonus, as well.

I know you're pretty much sold on the 360 already, Sheik, but I thought I'd just point out a couple of the nice features on the PS3 that you don't get from the 360.

Also, I like that you can expand the hard-drive size on PS3 without being stuck with their proprietary one.

Another plus for the PS3 is that the games are not region locked, so importing is available for the games that aren't released in your particular territory.  It's also really pretty.  :)

I have both and I only really use the PS3 for Blu-Ray and various video files. I rarely play games on it.

Same here, but that's really only because I'm half invested in my gamer score.  (Though I'm currently playing on my dusty ps2)

I hear the same from alot of people. Afew of my friends have both a ps3 and a xbox360. And they like the xbox360 alot more. The main complaints I have heard are that PS3 is a little laggy at times. I havn't had that experience but I will take the owners word for it.

Just be careful, it doesn't work that way.

The machine is not region locked, it's much fairer to say it ignores regional encoding on discs, and will play games from anywhere, but it the games content can have regional restrictions which is enforced, as many people are finding out the hard way when they import Rock Band.

And that's only for Games, the PS3 is region locked for Blu Ray.

Both Machines have their benefits, and it was a hard decision to make, but ultimately my decision was based on Rock Band, and there the Xbox is primary platform there and the PS3 is shafted regularly, so that swayed my decision.

Can I just say that I hate the PS3 controller.

It's almost the same as the PS2's but those smoushy trigger buttons make it feel really weird.

If you are going to get a Ps3 I would say wait until Christmas the rumor is that it will drop to $300 by then.

Yeah I have to go with the tide of Xbox supporters on this one. The bulk of the game library is identical, but the handfull of Xbox exclusive games are way better than the much smaller handfull of PS3 games. PS3 makes a better DVD player, but when it's time to game, my Xbox gets more milage than my PS3 by a long shot.

I went with a PS3, and don't think I will ever get an Xbox. But that's not me saying get the PS3, it was just my choice. As mentioned before, a lot of the Xbox exclusive games end up (or start) on PC, so if your computer can run them (like mine can) their isn't much of an incentive (for me) to get an Xbox. Now even if my computer couldn't run them, I still would have gone with the PS3, but this is based on my preference of games. The exclusive titles for Xbox never really caught my interest. I tried playing Gears of War, once, and it failed to sell me on it. The PS3, however, has Ratchet and Clank, a series I have loved since the beginning. Plus, Insomniac (made R&C) made Resistance (and R2 by the time I got mine), so that pretty much convinced me.

I should mention that the 160gb models that come with Uncharted do NOT have backwards compatibility. I don't think it's even possible to get a BC one anymore.

I guess what I'm trying to say is look at what exclusive games you can get for each system. Don't get wrapped up in which has better graphics (weren't we all excited when they made another 8-bit MegaMan?) , which has better DLC, which can play BluRay (sure, lets pay double for a movie so it looks a little better), and all that nonsense. It is a GAMING system, after all.

I guess it really does depend on whose exclusives are more appealing. Personally, Mass Effect is what made my mind for me. Just as KotOR made my mind for me on the original Xbox. As you said about most games on the 360, yes, ME is available on PC, but since my machine is woefully behind, getting a $300 Xbox 360 is way cheaper than getting a new computer. As for the PS3, I haven't been into platformers for years, so R&C don't really do it for me. I will miss God of War 3, though.

I went with a PS3 about a year ago.  The primary reason was the blu-ray player.  If it didn't have that, then yeah, I probably would have gotten an xbox.  But I play games on my PS3 constantly, I love it.  The PSN is great, it's got some awesome downloadable games.  And it wont RRoD ever, which I've always been amazed how loyal people are to their xboxes....for the most part people don't seem to mind that the systems fail at an alarming rate.

And while most games come out for both systems, let's not act like the PS3 exclusives are anything to scoff at.  Uncharted was fantastic, and Killzone 2 was awesome as well.  And there's a bunch of awesome exclusives coming up like InFamous, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2.... But, hey, xbox has some great exclusives as well.....I really wish I could play Left 4 Dead, I wish I had access to DLC for GTA IV and Fallout 3

You can't play shooters on a Playstation controller. Done.

Maybe you can't, but I've been using the PS controller forever, and I have no problems with it.  I'm not arguing that the PS controller is better than xbox's, but I think it's a great controller.
