360 or PS3? Help me out here!
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:11:01 AM »
Okay, so I just won a crapload of money a couple of hours ago (living in Las Vegas does have its perks) and now I've got several hundred dollars burning a hole in my pocket.  I figure its time I finally pony up for either the X-Box 360 or the PS3.  I don't know which one to get.  The PS3 has the Blu Ray of course and I don't have a Blu Ray player yet but its more money.  The 360 is backwards will work with most of my old Xbox games from what I understand.  They both have some great, exclusive games.  My wife and I already have a Wii and as much as we love it, it seems like ninety percent of the games made for it are crap. I'm determined to buy one or the other TODAY.  Knowing most of you guys, you probably have both of them already so, if you had to chose one, which would it be?

I went with the 360.  It has great downloadable content for videos/games/game add ons.  It has a great selection for games too.  It has some pretty cool features like bieng able to play Netflix instant movies through it.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it and I think the Netflix instant movies might be the thing that seals it for me.  I don't watch many of them now because I don't feel like sitting in front of my PC to watch a movie.  Does the hard drive size matter all that much?  I know there are different models.

I got a 360 and I have yet to see a reason to get a PS3,unless you are a really big MGS solid fan I see no reason to get PS3.

You can get a 360 and a couple of games for the price of a PS3.

Also I have been to a friend's house who has a 360 and PS3 hooked up to an HDTV and I can't say there is a real diforance in graphics.

There isn't a real big difference in graphics, because developers haven't been optimising games for the PS3, rather than just porting them over.  That's been negatively affecting the multi-platform titles, apparently, because of the lack of attention paid to that sort of thing.  I've read that as the PS3 gets more popular (and it is) and there are a few exclusive titles out on it this year, developers will be exploiting its power more and highlighting the difference between the 2 consoles.

That being said: if you want games right now, I'd pick the 360 - it's got a large back catalogue, so there are plenty of cheap options available, and the online store is better than PSN's.  Just make sure to get the Elite version, and avoid any silly "red ring" accidents.

I'm amazed this hasn't turned into a giant flamewar.  Yet.  I like this site.

Go with the 360.  I agonized over the decision for months before settling on an Xbox, and I'm absolutely certain I made the right decision.  The PS3 just doesn't have the games right now, and as such it's not worth the money, Blu-ray or no.  Not to mention that yes, an Xbox 360 is mostly backward compatible, allowing you to play most of those Xbox games you already have.  It doesn't handle ALL original Xbox games, but there's a handy list online that can let you know which games it will play and which it won't.

The downsides to the 360 are basically paying for online play (though at $50 a year it's not exactly bank-breaking), and a higher-than-acceptable failure rate.  But keep your machine in a cool, open and relatively dust-free spot, and avoid marathon usage as much as possible, and you can hopefully extend the life of your system and avoid the dreaded RROD.  Maybe.

Do NOT buy any third-party cooling systems that plug into the back of the system, however.  Those things can do way more harm than good.

Just make sure to get the Elite version, and avoid any silly "red ring" accidents.

Actually, from what I've heard and researched for when I made my purchase, an Elite's no less likely to fail than a more recent Pro model is.  I guess I could be wrong, but I'd say only go with an Elite if you have the extra $100 and really want the giant hard drive.  But what's a Pro at now, 60 gigs?  That's nothing to sneeze at.  (I, of course, got mine a mere week or two before they upped the hard drive size, so I'm feeling quite ripped off at my paltry 20gb drive.)

Anyway, congratulations, and enjoy.  Even if you go with a PS3, there's still tons of great multiplatform titles and a handful of exclusives, so in general I'd say either current-gen console is better than no current-gen console at all.  Except the Wii.  Which, like, half-counts.  (I'm not hating; I've got one too.)

I heard the newer versions of Xbox360 have a better chip that will help it not RRoD. Also I do love the 120gigs of memory. Now that you can actualy Install game CDs onto your harddrive. Its well worth investing in the bigger harddrive.

I also heard the less you use the CD rom the less likely it is to RRoD. Not sure where I heard that, but I install every game to my harddrive now.

I bought my 360 Last June and shipped it in a plastic tote via UPS from Maine to Colorado, and it is working fine.  No red rings at all.

My brother had a RRoD.  He put it in his fridge for 15 minutes and it worked again.  *shrug*

Wow.  Only one here to recommend the PS3, then?  Ah, well. ;)

I personally wanted the PS3 more than the 360.  I already had a PS2, though, with quite a few games, and the backwards compatibility with upscaled, smoothed graphics was a big thing for me.  Plus I wanted a Blu-Ray player; the High-Def war was still going on, and Paramount had just gone HD-DVD, but I gambled and figured Blu would win.  I'm not real big into downloadable video, though, or audio for that matter, either (I still refuse to buy an mp3 player; I'd rather spend 16 bucks on a CD and take a chance that there's a few songs I won't like than spend 16 bucks on mp3s that are intentionally worse quality.  Never mind if the difference in sound is almost negligible).  I also notice that most of the catalog titles for XBox usually end up on the PC, whereas PS3 tends to be hit and miss; I honestly prefer PC gaming overall, so that was a big factor in my decision.

Oddly enough, I hate the Metal Gear series now, so I can't use that to recommend it.  I liked Solid 1, but when Sons of Liberty came out, it started getting on my nerves.  When a game takes 8 hours to finish, and only about 2 and a half of that is actual gameplay and not cutscenes, that's just absurd.  I can't even imagine how bad it got by MGS4.

Unfortunately, the backwards compatibility is long gone.  Otherwise, I'd probably consider picking up a PS3, too.

Put another tickmark in the Xbox camp.  For me, the fact that the Platinum Hits line is already well-established -- meaning you can pick up thirty or so of the best games yet released for 20-30 bucks a pop, not to mention used games -- is the major factor.  I can't in good conscience lay out $60 for a new game, so the fact that I can go through the back catalog at 1/2 or 1/3 price, and there are enough games in that catalog that I should never need to buy a new game, is a big win.

By the way, I'd definitely go with the Pro model.  With the 60 GB hard drive on the Pro, there's not longer any reason to buy the Elite.  The cost of the Pro over the Arcade is about the same as you would pay if you bought the extra components a la carte, and those components are an essential upgrade.  With the elite, though, you're mostly getting more hard drive space than most people will ever use, and you're paying an overinflated price for an HDMI cable, which you can get for a couple of bucks through Eforcity on Amazon.

That meens that the hardware is failing. When I first had a RRoD I stopped playing for a day. And it didnt come back until a month later. My games would freeze up but no RRoD. This continued to happen for 2-3 more months until I was fed up and forced a RRoD.... Wrapping my 360 in a towel and keeping it on for 2-3 hours... Remember to take out your harddrive first before doing this :)
