Cartoon Network ditching all-'toon format

Cable station no longer living up to its name, will get in to live-action reality shows, scripted programs.

First MTV stops showing music videos, now this? Cartoon Network is sticking with the "Network" portion of its name, but ditching the strictly "Cartoon" bit, the company announced today. Nineteen new projects were announced, and less than half will be hand-drawn.

"These exciting new projects represent the next phase in Cartoon Network's ambitious, ongoing strategy to re-invent the network and re-energize our youth business overall," said Stuart Snyder.

These new non-cartoons will start airing in the coming 2009-2010 season and feature reality and scripted programs, most of which sound like pint-sized versions of programs currently airing on other networks.

Highlights: The Othersiders is a mini-Ghost Hunters, with five friends exploring scary places; Destroy Build Destroy is like Human Wrecking Balls, with two teams blowing stuff up; Dude, What Would Happen is a Mythbusters clone; Bobb'e Says takes the ridiculously funny child actor Bobb'e J. Thompson (Human Giant, Role Models) in his own take of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Also announced was a live-action Ben 10: Alien Force movie, a Scooby-Doo! prequel telefilm, and a full CG movie titled Firebreather!

Don't worry all you glassy-eyed college students--it doesn't look like the late-night Adult Swim block will be affected by any of this.

Sigh. Oh look. Cartoon Network's trying to go the Nickelodeon route.

Well this makes me glad I am not paying for direct tv any  more.

Is there anything worth watching on American Tv any more?

It seems like all the current shows I watch are from other countries.

Now if they reprogrammed themselves into the 24 hour Adult Swim Network, then they'd have my attention.

This is just sad. Reality shows just need to die. Die a horrible, painful, and final death.

We should deal with the people who keep making reality shows as we would a cancer - by exposing them to intense doses of radiation until they wither and die.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Hmmm... A Scooby-Doo prequel telefilm?

Tread carefully.  We're awfully close to April Fools'.

True, but we've already seen CN do some crappy live action stuff.  Didn't they have a live Ace Ventura Jr thing going?

MYAH! Bitch, complain, rant, nerd rage, anger, etc.

I won't bother, I really won't.

I'll just say I'm shocked. If I'm reading this right, they're going with kid programs featuring kids? Like, those things that get stuck to the bottom of your shoe, kids? Because I just really thought if they went in any direction, it would be toward more adult programming, since Adult Swim has been the most popular thing on the network for years. Unless that's the point, and they're trying to get back the younger audiences.

Ultimately though... ultimately... who cares? These shows won't be on when I tune in during primetime, I can assume. I don't know any of their other childrens programming, so why would I moan about these new ones?

Well, you could issue a press release that TNT has greenlit a new show that does NOT involve dynamite, and people would complain about it without really thinking.

Now, if they changed their name to just "Network," I'd go ahead and complain.

Why do people always bitch so much about reality TV? You may not like it, but obviously some people do, because it continues to be a profitable venture. Don't blame the networks, blame the fucksticks who eat up those idiotic shows and make it worth the networks' time.

Well, I'm pretty sure reality TV starring children is illegal. Or at least it damn well should be. Why are kids only allowed to work in the worst possible, most mentally damaging business? Especially after all the evidence.

Woah, easy there with your "evidence" talk. If you're not careful, someone will make a reality TV show based on CSI. Er... ANOTHER reality TV show based on CSI, that is. ;)
